Close-ended questionnaires and open-ended questionnaires will be used to get data on the use of the WhatsApp group in improving students' speaking ability. The researchers employed the Likert scale to get the information related to two indicators in this research. 5 was given for strongly agree (SA), 4 for agree (A), 3 for neutral (N), 2 for disagree (D), and 1 for strongly disagree (SD). Meanwhile, the open-ended questionnaire consisted of 8 questions that asked about the role of the WhatsApp group in learning to speak. The results of the study showed that learning using WhatsApp group as a means of speaking can improve students' motivation in learning English and produce positive effects and benefits for non-English college major students in improving their speaking skills.

Abstract

The humans` psychological needs can lead to frustration or satisfaction. Satisfaction with regard to basic psychological needs is characterized as an energetic situation that causes a rise in confidence as well as a healthy motivational orientation promoting wellness. The aims of this study were to adapt the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale (BPNSFS) for use in Malaysia and to indicate how levels of need satisfaction and frustration are related to the daily life of students in the classroom. The three core psychological demands of competence, autonomy, and relatedness are taken into account in the scale's measurement of satisfaction and frustration. The researchers relied on Brislin's (1970) outline of the back-translation method's basic framework to carry out the process of translating this instrument. To carry out the translation process, a total of eight qualified linguists who are experts in the language field were utilized. Other than that, the researcher employed the external critic approach to evaluate the content validity and linguistics. In general, expert assessors accepted the BPNSNF instrument items. It can be concluded the current research offers researchers a tool to evaluate students' basic psychological need satisfaction and frustration among adolescents.

Abstract

The occurrence of diglossia is seen in several contexts and settings, including both official and informal domains. This study's primary objective is to investigate students' language preferences, motivations, and language attitudes. Data were collected from undergraduate English students at the Muhammadiyah University of Banjarmasin via questionnaire in Google Form. The study used a descriptive quantitative methodology. The present research used a descriptive test analysis approach using the SPSS version 25 software for Windows. According to the results on language selection, the association between high variation (H) and low variation (L) may be diglossic. Regarding linguistic attitudes, most respondents exhibit a favourable disposition towards a wide variety instead of low variation across all dimensions. This inclination may be attributed to their academic specialisation. Nevertheless, a significant proportion of participants believed that the Low variation had supplanted the High variety as the predominant linguistic form used by the Indonesian population. Therefore, the diglossic link between the High and Low types will persist in Indonesia. The study results provide insights into the diglossic condition of diglossia in a multilingual society and provide a reflection of the perspectives held by young people in Indonesia about the two distinct kinds present within their communities.
