Abstract

This paper looks at one of the unique cultures of Indonesia, the Minangkabau, in West Sumatera Province. Minangkabau is known as one of the biggest cultures in the world practicing matrilineal system in its family. This system means that every child who is born follows his or her mother`s clan line. Matrilineal education integrates religious and cultural values to their children. According to this system, there are four central figures that have important roles in educating young generations of Minangkabau. They are Bundo Kanduang, Ninik Mamak, Alim Ulama, and Cadiak Pandai. The purpose of this paper is to explore the roles of these four central figures of Minangkabau in integrating religious and cultural values to the young generation. The data for this paper uses secondary data, namely the study of literature. Data analysis techniques in this study are three roots of reduction, presentation, and verification of data. Results show that each of the four central figures has different roles but they are united to integrate the education system of the Minangkabau community.

Abstract

The development of Android-based interactive digital textbooks is one of the means which is expected to help improve students' understanding of concepts in the learning process. Interactive digital books can be used as a tool by lecturers in the learning process in the classroom so that lecturers do not only use conventional learning methods in the learning process. In line with the times, many lecturers, students and even the public generally access all information via digital. This paper aims to create an Android-based interactive digital textbook as media and resources for Nonformal Education (PLS) learning tools. The ADDIE Model (Branch, 2009) is used in this study. It consists of five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The research starts with a literature review and need`s assessment of 47 students for an Android-based interactive digital textbook, followed by a textbook draft. After compiling the Android-based interactive digital textbook, it is validated by three experts: content/material expert, presentation expert, and Indonesian language expert. After being evaluated by three experts, the draft of an Android-based interactive digital textbook is revised to accommodate individual and small group testing. In the outstanding category, interactive digital media textbooks and PLS learning resources based on Android received a total score of 146 (91.25%) from three expert validators. This research shows that interactive digital textbooks are very practical, with a practicality percentage of 83.33% for one-to-one and 83.16% for small groups. The android-based PLS media and learning resources are valid and valuable. Due to the lack of availability of media teaching materials and learning resources in out-of-school education, the presence of Android-based textbooks that can be accessed anywhere and at any time can help both lecturers and students understand media materials and learning resources outside of school.

Abstract

In academic settings, the relationship between writing practices and identity formation is a cornerstone of scholarly inquiry. As individuals engage in writing, they convey information and construct and negotiate their identities within disciplinary, cultural, and linguistic frameworks. This review paper provides a comprehensive synthesis of existing scholarship on the intricate relationship between writing practices and identity formation in academic contexts. Drawing upon a systematic analysis of 30 studies, the paper illuminates the complex interplay between language, culture, and academic discourse in shaping authorial identities. Key themes explored include conceptualizing writing as an act of identity construction, the challenges faced by distinct student populations in establishing authorial voices, disciplinary variations in identity formation, and pedagogical implications for academic writing instruction. The review integrates diverse theoretical frameworks, such as sociocultural perspectives, academic literacy approaches, and integrationist models, offering a nuanced understanding of the mechanisms underlying identity construction through writing. Furthermore, this review also identifies gaps and potential avenues for future research, including the need for longitudinal studies, the exploration of individual agency in identity formation, and the examination of emerging technologies and interdisciplinary collaborations. Ultimately, this synthesis adds to ongoing conversations about how writing practices affect identity formation. It does this by informing teaching methods and institutional policies that support positive identity development among diverse academic communities.

Abstract

Dadio is a traditional food of the Malay community in Kampar, Indonesia, made from fermented buffalo milk using bamboo as a medium. It is consumed as a supplementary food and is an essential part of traditional ceremonies, a practice that continues to this day. This study aimed to understand the dadio-making process among the Malay community in Kampar and analyze the scientific concepts embedded within it. A case study design was employed, focusing on the dadio-making process in Limau Manis Village, Kampar Regency. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis. Data analysis was conducted using Miles and Huberman's interactive model, encompassing data collection, reduction, display, and conclusion. The results show that the community uses buffalo milk, tipih manih bamboo (Schizostachyum blumei), and batu banana leaves (Musa Paradisiaca var. balbisiana colla) to make dadio. The process begins with traditional buffalo milking and a 12-hour fermentation process. Dadio has become an identity for the Malay community in Kampar due to its use in traditional ceremonies and as a supplementary food. The community believes that consuming dadio offers health benefits such as managing hypertension and cholesterol and serving as a supplement for pregnant and lactating women. The dadio-making process involves various scientific concepts, including microbial metabolism, microbial diversity, bacterial physiology, plant anatomy and morphology, and fermentation. Thus, it holds potential as a learning resource for biology.

Abstract

The humans` psychological needs can lead to frustration or satisfaction. Satisfaction with regard to basic psychological needs is characterized as an energetic situation that causes a rise in confidence as well as a healthy motivational orientation promoting wellness. The aims of this study were to adapt the Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction and Frustration Scale (BPNSFS) for use in Malaysia and to indicate how levels of need satisfaction and frustration are related to the daily life of students in the classroom. The three core psychological demands of competence, autonomy, and relatedness are taken into account in the scale's measurement of satisfaction and frustration. The researchers relied on Brislin's (1970) outline of the back-translation method's basic framework to carry out the process of translating this instrument. To carry out the translation process, a total of eight qualified linguists who are experts in the language field were utilized. Other than that, the researcher employed the external critic approach to evaluate the content validity and linguistics. In general, expert assessors accepted the BPNSNF instrument items. It can be concluded the current research offers researchers a tool to evaluate students' basic psychological need satisfaction and frustration among adolescents.
