Abstract

Objective: This study investigates the misrepresentation of Islam in the controversial Malaysian film Mentega Terbang through a detailed narrative analysis. The film, centered on a young Muslim girl's spiritual exploration and questioning of religious boundaries, has ignited significant public discourse and backlash, particularly within Muslim communities. The objective is to examine how Mentega Terbang portrays Islamic values, beliefs, and practices, and to identify elements within the narrative that may challenge or contradict mainstream Islamic teachings. Method: A qualitative narrative analysis was employed to examine the film’s storyline, character development, dialogue, and symbolism. This approach enabled the identification of underlying messages and potential misrepresentations related to Islamic principles. Results: The findings reveal that Mentega Terbang presents a complex and sometimes conflicting depiction of Islam, often deviating from established religious teachings. These portrayals may contribute to misunderstandings and reinforce negative perceptions among viewers. Novelty: This study offers a nuanced perspective on media representation of religion in Malaysia, highlighting how cinematic narratives can influence public perceptions of Islam. It contributes to media and religious studies by addressing the gap in understanding how fictional media shapes interfaith understanding in multicultural Muslim-majority societies. Recommendations are offered for responsible religious representation in film.

Abstract

If nothing is accomplished to stop it, the virality of fake news on social media will continue to grow and become more damaging, particularly among young people. Recognizing false information and verifying sources has become increasingly important as people rely on the Internet and social media for their news. The primary objective of this study is to assess the level of understanding of fake news media literacy among university students. Forty-three Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia students enrolled in the New Media Communication program were polled for this research. This study uses descriptive statistics to analyze the data collected via Google Forms—the results of examining the data generated immediately through a Google form. Young people read the news online but still have limited media literacy when assessing the truth of information. Research suggests that false statement is commonly discovered because young people do not carefully examine online news. Researchers conduct in-depth interviews and studies with this demographic to better understand how young people process information and evaluate its veracity. This research adds to the expanding body of knowledge on student use of social media in Malaysia, especially on how students get their news in light of the results of this pilot study, the main research project will consist of in-depth interviews with students to understand more about their perspectives on how to identify and differentiate between real and fake news.

Abstract

Media consolidation and sustainability through convergence are proving to be effective strategies. Media Group Network (MGN) implemented a newsgathering convergence approach in 2021 based on human resources requirements. A project dubbed MGN Press brought together journalists from Media Indonesia, Metro TV, and Medcom.id. Multi-skilled individuals who can work across platforms are needed as journalists. The process is examined using the notion of media management strategy in broadcasting, which entails planning, organizing, directing, and controlling, to meet organizational objectives. In-depth interviews and observation are used as part of the case study methodology in this study. The study’s findings demonstrate that changing a journalist’s skill set is not an easy task. It is critical during the planning phase to assign the most qualified individual to oversee the convergence of newsgathering. Additionally necessary is the creation of organizations that represent the three platforms’ journalists. Media Group Network continues to direct and inspire despite a variety of constraints and challenges. The future deployment of newsgathering convergence can be improved using control and evaluation mechanisms. The news collecting convergence method may increase the effectiveness of human resources when it is put into practice. Keywords: Convergence, efficiency, human resources, newsgatheringABSTRAKKonsolidasi dan keberlanjutan media melalui konvergensi terbukti menjadi strategi yang efektif.
