Abstract

This paper explores the aftermath of the Java War on the socio-religious climate in Magelang. The rate of Christianization in that landscape accelerated following the war between the colonial regime and local residents. The discussion reconsiders the strategies of two leading figures of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah in stemming Christianization in the 19th-century Magelang. The Christian missionary agenda in Magelang was accomplished by eliciting the community’s sympathy. The missionaries built public hospitals and churches for local residents and hence held the congress of Catholic political associations and De Gereformeerde zending in Midden-Java in Magelang. The Dutch government also issued various policies to suppress Islamic movements. This paper finds that Dalhar Abdurrahman and Ahmad Dahlan responded to the missionary agenda in Magelang with non-confrontational strategies. Dalhar divided the socio-religious landscape of Magelang into two regions, the South and the North, based on the situation of Christian development. Dalhar also build a pesantren in Watucongkol and initiated the foundation of the Magelang Branch of NU to coordinate Muslim reformists. Dahlan halted Christianization by establishing a modern educational institution called Kweekschool Islam in an effort to compete with Dutch schools in Magelang. Dahlan also frequently engaged in dialogues and debates with the Christian missionaries.

Abstract

This study uses a library research method, which includes analysis of scientific literature, books, and historical documents. Information is collected from relevant and credible works, including historical relics in the region. This study aims to describe the historical spread of Islam in Southeast Asia, explain the factors that influenced Islamization, and identify its impact on local communities' social, cultural, and political life. The study results show that Islam entered Southeast Asia through the role of Muslim traders from Arabia, Persia, and India who sailed through maritime trade routes. Sufis played an essential role in introducing Islam with a humanistic, moderate, and adaptive da'wah approach, which was adapted to local culture. Traces of Islamization can be seen in relics such as ancient tombs, classical Islamic books, and the tradition of Islamic boarding school education in Indonesia. Islam also developed rapidly in large kingdoms such as Samudra Pasai, Aceh Darussalam, Demak, and Mataram. Islamization in Southeast Asia lasted centuries, significantly transforming various aspects of people's lives. The region's social, cultural, and political systems are influenced by Islamic values, which introduced the principles of equality and justice amidst the previously dominant Hindu-Buddhist caste system. Educational legacies such as Islamic boarding schools have contributed significantly to spreading Islamic teachings and developing a generation of Muslim intellectuals who remain relevant today. Islam in Southeast Asia is also characterized by religious moderation, allowing Islamic teachings to coexist with local traditions and other religions. The region is now home to the largest Muslim populations in the world, with Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam as examples of countries that have successfully integrated Islamic teachings into modern life.

Abstract

At this time, political ethics seemed to no longer apply, in fact now political ethics seem to have disappeared from society. Politics is defined as an arena of struggle for power and interests, doing everything possible to achieve a goal. One example is the practice of money politics that occurs in village head elections which does not at all reflect the behavior of someone who is religious, especially Islam, which prohibits unethical behavior. Therefore, researchers are interested in discussing the thoughts of a major figure, namely Al-Mawardi with a scientific work entitled Al Mawardi's Political Ethics: An Analysis of the Village Head Election Case in Lamongan Regency in 2019. So, this research will analyze how Al Mawardi's political ethics is compared to the money politics case in Lamongan Regency? The urgency of this research is to analyze the impact of money politics which can damage ethics in politics on society. This type of research is qualitative research using a case study approach, in order to obtain in-depth information and assist in the analysis process. Data collection methods include observation and interviews as well as sources of informants including people who have the right to vote in elections. The results obtained in this study, namely the constellation of money politics practices in Lamongan Regency are caused by a lack of public awareness of the importance of the concept of political ethics in religion which prohibits this unethical behavior. In this work, it is hoped that people will open their eyes consciously.
