Abstract

This study aims to identify the challenges and inhibiting factors that affect vocabulary acquisition in English language learning. The research was conducted using a qualitative method, specifically through structured interviews. Descriptive research was also employed to process the data. The participants were 32 second-semester students from the English Education Study Program at Universitas Nias. Six questions were prepared for the participants, with responses based on their personal experiences. The results revealed that many participants cited laziness as a significant factor hindering their vocabulary improvement, largely due to their infrequent use of English in daily life. Other factors included low motivation and interest, difficulties with word meaning and grammar, and challenges with pronunciation. These factors were categorized into psychological factors—such as low motivation, interest, and laziness in memorizing words—and linguistic factors, which included difficulties with word meaning, grammar, and pronunciation. Additional reasons identified were a lack of confidence in speaking English with others, frequent forgetting of vocabulary, difficulty understanding context, learning dependent on mood, and limited study time. These were further classified into psychological factors, such as lack of confidence and study laziness, and cognitive factors, like difficulty remembering vocabulary.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze classroom management applied in the process of teaching speaking skills in English classes. Classroom management is an essential aspect that influences the effectiveness of learning, especially in speaking skills, which require active interaction between teachers and students. This study employs a qualitative approach using observation, interview, and documentation methods involving English teachers and students at UPTD SMP Negeri 5 Gunungsitoli. The focus of the analysis includes classroom management strategies used by teachers to create a conducive learning environment, time management techniques, the arrangement of student interactions, and the handling of disturbances during speaking lessons. The findings reveal that teachers use a combination of classroom management techniques such as grouping students for discussions, providing clear instructions, and giving positive reinforcement to motivate learners. However, challenges remain in controlling distractions and maintaining students’ focus during speaking activities. This research recommends the need for specific training for teachers in effective and adaptive classroom management strategies to ensure that the teaching of speaking skills runs more optimally and results in maximum learning outcomes. Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a fundamental aspect of English language learning, contributing significantly to students' communication skills. This study aims to explore students' perceptions of the role of songs in enhancing English vocabulary mastery. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through a questionnaire consisting of 15 Likert-scale statements, distributed to eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Lolofitu Moi. The results indicate that most students perceive songs as an effective tool for improving vocabulary retention, motivation, and pronunciation. The engaging nature of songs makes learning more enjoyable, leading to increased interest and independent learning outside the classroom. However, some students reported that while songs help with memorization, they still struggle with applying new vocabulary in conversations. These findings suggest that songs can be a valuable supplementary learning resource, but should be combined with other interactive teaching methods for maximum effectiveness. This study provides insights for educators to design more engaging vocabulary learning strategies.
