Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease that is one of the leading causes of death in the world. Indonesia ranks second highest in global TB cases, with Medan City being one of the areas with significant cases. This study aims to analyze the factors that influence the treatment of TB patients at the PB Selayang II Health Center in Medan City. The study used a qualitative descriptive method with an in-depth interview approach to ten TB patients until information saturation was reached. The results of the analysis showed that the factors that most influenced the treatment of TB patients were compliance, knowledge, and demographic factors such as age, educations. Family support, personal motivation, and the role of health workers also play an important role in the success of treatment. This study concludes that interventions to improve patient compliance and knowledge, as well as paying attention to socio-economic conditions, are very important in TB control programs at the primary health care level.

Abstract

Diabetic mellitus (DM) is a degenerative condition marked by high blood suger levels brought on by a malfunction in the metabolisme of insulin. Serious side effect, such as harm to organs including the pancreas can result from uncontrolled diabetes mellitus the use of medicanal plants, such the kersen leaf (Muntingia calabura L.), which includes active substances like flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins and tannins whith possible antidiabetetic effects, is one altenate therapy option that is presently being investigated. Using male white rats (Rattus norvegicus) with diabetes, this study intends to assess the impact of an ethanolic extract of (Muntingia calabura L.) leaves on the pancreas and identify the optimal dosage for mitigating pancreatic cell damage. Five groups are used in this pure experimental study: three treatment groups that get extract doses of 150,300 and 600 mg/kgBW; a positive control that receives glibencalmide; and a negative control that receives Na CMC. Assessments were made of pancreatic histology and blood glucose levels. The results should offer scientific validation for the long-standing practice of using cherry leaves to treat diabetes.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from insulin resistance or deficiency. One of its severe complications is diabetic foot ulcers, which are prone to infection, especially by Pseudomonas aeruginosa—a Gram-negative opportunistic bacterium capable of forming biofilms and highly resistant to common antibiotics. This resistance complicates wound healing and increases the risk of amputation, emphasizing the need for alternative treatments. Abelmoschus manihot L. (Gedi leaves) contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, and phenolics, which are believed to possess antibacterial properties. This study aims to evaluate the potential of ethanolic Gedi leaf extract as an active ingredient in antibacterial ointment formulations. Ethanolic extracts were prepared and formulated into ointments at concentrations of 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8%. The formulations were tested for physical properties (pH, spreadability, organoleptic characteristics) and antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa using the disk diffusion method. Results showed that the ointments had a uniform semi-solid texture, a characteristic herbal aroma, green color, and pH values ranging from 6.3 to 6.7—suitable for topical application. Spreadability ranged between 4.1 cm and 5.3 cm. The inhibition zones for the 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8% formulations were 6.67 mm, 8.00 mm, and 10.67 mm, respectively. No inhibition was observed with the negative control (DMSO), while the positive control (Bioplacenton) showed a 15.00 mm zone. In conclusion, Gedi leaf extract ointment demonstrated effective antibacterial activity against P. aeruginosa, with consistent physical properties across all concentrations. These findings suggest its potential as a natural topical therapy for treating bacterial infections in diabetic foot ulcers.

Abstract

Hyperglycemia, characterized by elevated blood glucose levels, is a key clinical feature of diabetes mellitus. In recent years, medicinal plants have gained attention as alternative therapies due to their relatively minimal side effects. This study aimed to explore the potential of acombined ethanol extract of bay leaf (Syzgium polyanthum) and cepcepan leaf (castanopsis costata) in lowering blood flucose leveles in white rats (Rattus norvegicus) induced with alloxan. The extraction process was carried out using the maceration methos with 96% ethanol. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of active compounds such as flavonoids, alkoloids, tannins, saponins, and steroid. The rats were divided into six groups: a normal group. A negative control group (alloxan only), a positive control group (glibenclamide 0.45 mg/kgBB), and three treatment groups receiving the combined extract at doses of 120 mg/kgBW, 250mg/kgBW, and 500mg/kgBW. Blood glucose levels were monitored from day 0 to day 15. ANOVA analysis showed a reduction in glucose levels among the treatment groups, althought the results were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). nevertheless, a consistent downward trend was observed, particularyl in the group receiving 250mg/kgBW. These findings suggest that the ethanol extract combination of bay and cepcepan leaves holds promise as an antihyperlycemic agent. However, frurther research is necessary to confirm its efficacy and fully understand its mechanism of action.
