Abstract

Oil palm development in Indonesia faces various agronomic constraints, especially related to soil chemical properties that are less supportive of productivity. This study aims to identify the status of soil chemical properties on oil palm land in Saliki Village, Muara Badak District, East Kalimantan, to support more appropriate land management. The research was conducted from September to November 2024 using a purposive random sampling method on 13 hectares of land, with six sampling center points and four subsamples per point. Laboratory analysis was conducted on soil pH, C-organic content, total N, available P, potential K, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and base saturation. The results showed that the soil in the 6-year-old oil palm land had a pH of 3.63-3.93 and base saturation of 13.69-13.81%, while at the age of 15 years, the pH decreased to 3.12-3.38 and base saturation was only 4.62-6.95%. Meanwhile, available P and potential K levels tended to increase with increasing plant age. Based on these findings, fertilization is recommended according to the IOPRI standard for mineral soils as follows: for 6 years old, urea 2.75 kg/year, TSP 1.75 kg/year, and KCl 2.75 kg/year, while for 11 and 15 years old, urea 3.25 kg/year, TSP 2 kg/year, and KCl 3 kg/year. This study emphasizes the importance of periodic monitoring of soil chemical properties as a basis for sustainable management of oil palm plantations.

Abstract

Babulu District in Penajam Paser Utara Regency, East Kalimantan, is an area with high potential in the development of oil palm plantations. However, the increase in oil palm land area raises the issue of land use change, especially rice field conversion. This study aims to map and analyze changes in oil palm land use from 2015 to 2024 using Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS and Landsat 9 OLI/TIRS satellite imagery. The methods used include image pre-processing, onscreen digitization, supervised multispectral classification, and map overlapping to detect spatial changes. The map accuracy test was carried out by cross-checking the results of image digitization and multispectral classification with 30 sample locations in the field that had been checked for veracity. The results of the study show that the use of oil palm land in Babulu District in 2015 was 14,129.25 ha. The use of oil palm land in Babulu District in 2024 will be 15,817.36 ha. The change in the area of oil palm land use in Babulu District increased by 1688.11 ha in a period of nine years, with a rate of change of 187 ha/year. This change is dominated by the northern area of Babulu District which has a steep topography and is the main location for palm oil expansion, driven by topographic factors, the presence of large companies, and the economic value of palm oil commodities. This study shows the importance of spatial monitoring in sustainable land use management and the need for policies that balance economic growth and productive land conservation.

Abstract

Abstract: This community service activity was carried out in Kelian Village, an area with significant potential in the agricultural and smallholder plantation sectors but facing various structural challenges such as limited infrastructure, market access, and farmer institutional capacity. This activity aimed to increase community capacity through a participatory approach that included identifying local potential, training in cultivating superior commodities (rubber and smallholder oil palm), strengthening farmer group institutions, and developing community action plans. The methods used included direct observation, focus group discussions, participatory mapping, and technical and institutional training. The activity results showed an increase in community understanding of sustainable cultivation practices, the formation of new farmer groups, and a growing collective awareness to transform towards a more independent and competitive agricultural system. Further mentoring, locally based training, and multi-stakeholder collaboration are recommended to support the sustainability of the initiatives that have been initiated. This experience demonstrates that a participatory approach effectively builds social capital and strengthens the foundations of inclusive and sustainable village development.

Abstract

This study aims to map the potential of the livestock sector in Berau Regency using the Location Quotient (LQ) and Geographic Information System (GIS) approaches to identify basic commodities and their spatial distribution patterns. A quantitative approach was used to analyze secondary data from the Animal Husbandry Service and related agencies. At the same time, spatial analysis was conducted to visualize the distribution of livestock populations and regional development zoning. The results of the LQ analysis indicate that goats, buffalo, and cattle are basic commodities with significant contributions to the regional economy. Meanwhile, native chickens and ducks serve as complementary sources of food, supporting local food security. The results of the spatial mapping show a contrasting distribution pattern between inland and coastal areas. The integration of LQ and GIS resulted in a livestock development zoning consisting of: (1) a ruminant base zone in the central-southern region, (2) a poultry base zone in coastal and island areas, and (3) a support zone in non-base areas such as Tabalar and Teluk Bayur. These findings confirm that the development of the livestock subsector in Berau Regency requires a spatial and evidence-based planning approach to encourage land efficiency, economic equity, and environmental sustainability. Therefore, the results of this study can serve as a basis for strategic planning in the development of competitive and sustainable livestock areas at the regional level.
