Abstract

This research aims to reveal the representation of brotherhood in the document titled Watsiqoh 'an al Ukhuwah al-Insaniyyah min Ajli al Salam al 'Alami wa al 'Aisy Ma'an (hereinafter abbreviated as WUI) in 2019. The document contains a memorandum of understanding on human brotherhood between Muslims and Catholicism signed by Imam al-Azhar Sheikh Thayyeb and Pope Paul Francis in Abu Dhabi. The method of Corpus-Assisted Critical Discourse Analysis (CACDA) was used in this research. To collect the data, a corpus-based approach was applied through Voyant-tools.org site to see the frequency of word occurrences and identify the topics that dominate the document. The features of Cirrus, Links and Context were completed. Afterwards, Fairclough’s critical analysis model was applied to the data to reveal the representation of brotherhood reflected in the WUI, focusing on lexicon selection, mention of social actors, and social events. The results of the research show that there are words that often appear in the data, including words related to humanity (الناس, الانسان 'human' and الانسانية 'humanity') and words that have religious meaning (الأديان 'religions'), therefore it can be concluded that brotherhood reflected in the WUI document is based on humanity and religion.

Abstract

Indonesian women have undergone significant changes over time, as reflected in the vocabulary of the Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia (KBBI). This study aims to describe the representation of Indonesian women in the KBBI and to explain the development of their social and cultural lives over 30 years (1988–2018). The research employs a descriptive-qualitative approach by collecting data through the extraction of entries, definitions, compound words, and proverbs containing the terms “perempuan” (woman) and “wanita” (lady) from two printed editions of the KBBI: the first edition (1988) and the fifth edition (2018). Data analysis was conducted using Sketch Engine to analyze 1,381,578 tokens, and the findings revealed 1,148 collocations and concordances related to the terms “perempuan” and “wanita.” The results indicate that the study of Indonesian women within a linguistic corpus offers insights into their contributions over 30 years across various fields such as religion, military, economy, journalism, health, politics, arts and culture, and beauty. Through corpus-lexicography studies, the portrayal of Indonesian women in the dictionary has challenged patriarchal views that traditionally positioned women as inferior to men. This research highlights the importance of recognizing the representation of women in the social dynamics of Indonesian society. It offers a significant contribution to the broader field of Indonesia lexicography studies by examining how women are represented in dictionary entries.

Abstract

Local street foods are closely related to their cultural roots, thus the names of the food resemble their cultural identity. It is assumed that every name may have some background knowledge from its origin. This study aims to obtain an extensive description and classification of the lingual unit from West Java’s street foods. This research is an anthropological linguistic study using a descriptive qualitative method with an ethnosemantic approach. The result of this study shows 17 lingual unit data in the form of words, such as acronyms and original Sundanese words. Ten data were found in the form of attributive endocentric phrases which were classified into four parts. Those four parts are attributive phrases based on processing methods, regional origin, basic ingredients, and processed forms.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the basic clause structure in Sikka and identify the syntactic implications of the basic clause structure in Sikka. The primary data of the study were obtained from fieldwork interviews with two Sikka native speakers in Koting C village and Kokowahor village, online correspondence with one Sikka speaker, and introspection. The secondary data was taken from written texts in Sikka. The data were analyzed using transitivity alternation and work order pattern as the primary theoretical framework in this study. The result shows that Sikka has three types of basic clause structures distinguished by verb type (transitivity) and the number of core arguments involved in a clause (valency). The first basic clause type in Sikka is the intransitive clause (IC). ICs are clauses with one core argument (S). The second type is the transitive clause (TC). TC is a clause with two core arguments (A and O). The third type is the ditransitive clause (DC), which has three core arguments (A, PO, and SO. The predicate in DC can be a typical ditransitive verb or a serial verb construction (SVC). The results of basic clause structure identification in Sikka shed light on typological claims such as voice alternation and valency-changing mechanisms that distinguish languages in Eastern Indonesia from languages in Western Indonesia.

Abstract

The use of Indonesian, regional languages and foreign languages on business signs in Bandar Lampung shows language contestation. This language contest involves 14 languages, of these 14 languages there are languages that are dominant and those that are not. This research aims to map and analyze language distribution and describe language contestation through language use patterns that appear on business signboards. The observation method using photography techniques was used to collect data. A total of 300 photos of business nameplates along the main roads in 4 sub-districts (Teluk Betung Selatan, Teluk Betung Timur, Teluk Betung Utara, and Teluk Betung Barat) were taken as research objects. First, the data is grouped based on the pattern (monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual) then the grouped patterns are analyzed based on the type of business. Second, we look at the use of Lampung language for types of business. Research findings show that Indonesian is more dominant than other languages in monolingual and bilingual patterns, while in multilingual patterns Indonesian takes precedence over English. For the Lampung language, although it only appears on a handful of business boards, local identity still appears, especially in typical food and clothing businesses and in the names of tourist attractions. The social implication of this research is that the people of Lampung still have the awareness to preserve and reflect Lampung's cultural identity through the businesses they build.

Abstract

This article discusses dog metaphors in Batak Simalungun (BS) and English (ENG) proverbs. This study aims to identify the meaning features and interpret the perception of the people who speak both languages towards dogs reflected in their proverbs. The research used a qualitative descriptive method. Data were collected from two sources, namely written sources and oral sources. The data were analyzed with an anthropological linguistic approach, namely looking at the meaning features of dogs in both languages and interpreting them in the cultural context of the speakers. The results show that the dominating dog meaning feature in the proverbs of both languages is the nature of dogs. The meaning feature found in BS proverbs is only one meaning feature, which is about dog behavior. The dog meaning features in ENG proverbs have six meaning features, including dog traits (i.e., behavior, size, quality, and condition), body parts, position, age, dog day, and love for dogs. The things that influence the differences in the meaning features of dogs in the proverbs of the two languages consist of the speakers' environmental factors and social factors. The similarity of perception towards dogs in the culture of BS speakers and ENG speakers is the position of dogs, which are referred to as human friends and pets.

Abstract

In the era of social media, public figures do not merely share their personal lives but also construct self-image through linguistic practices that reflect social and religious identities. One such practice is sharenting, the act of sharing content about children or family life accompanied by specific narratives. Linguistic practices on social media, particularly sharenting by public figures, serve as a means of constructing and expressing intertwined social and religious identities. This study explores how language choices in the image captions of sharenting content posted by Oki Setiana Dewi, a Muslim celebrity known as both a preacher and a mother, reflect the construction of a Muslim mother identity in digital spaces. The research employs a qualitative sociolinguistic approach to analyze the language choices in the captions. The analysis reveals that the use of religious diction, prayerful expressions, and spiritual narratives serves as a linguistic strategy to affirm the mother's role as a moral educator and guardian of Islamic values within the family. Language functions not only as a means of conveying information but also as a tool for establishing social relations, constructing a religious self-image, and expressing the speaker's ideological position. Linguistic practices on social media can be understood as a means of representing Islamic identity while simultaneously reinforcing social credibility as a Muslim female public figure.
