Abstract

This study analyzes Typhoid Fever incidence at General Hospital Takum from 2012 to 2021 using ARIMA model. The initial data was non-stationary, necessitating differencing to achieve stationarity. The ARIMA (4,1,1) model, selected based on AIC, AICC, and BIC criteria, showed parameters within stationarity and invertibility constraints. Diagnostic tests validated the model's robustness, with Box-Ljung (Chi-Square = 6.7435, p = 0.7598), Shapiro-Wilk (W = 0.9754, p = 0.1213), and ARCH-LM (Chi-Square = 5.8762, p = 0.8176) results supporting its adequacy. Forecasts for the next 24 months indicate a significant upward trend in Typhoid Fever cases. The study recommends among others a regular update to the model with new data to ensure accuracy, consideration of additional variables that may influence Typhoid Fever trends, and implementation of targeted public health interventions based on forecasted trends to mitigate the rising incidence.

Abstract

This study eval_uates the effect of exchange rates on Nigeria's economic growth between 1990 and 2020 was examined. The exchange rate was limited to the nominal exchange rate, and real gross domestic product was used as a proxy for the growth of the economy. Secondary data were collected from the Central Bank of Nigeria statistical bulletin for the period of the study. The OLS regression and Granger Causality test were used for analysis in the study. The findings demonstrated that one of the two explanatory variables, exchange rate, has a substantial significant effect on economic growth. The causality test also showed that there is two-way causality between exchange rate and the economic growth. The study concludes that increase when there is increase in exchange rate, the economic growth (GDP) will increase in Nigeria since exchange rate is and essential and significant predictor of economic growth.

Abstract

Meningitis remains a critical public health issue in Nigeria, particularly within the dry season when environmental factors such as low humidity and dust elevate transmission risks. Using historical incidence data from 2012 to 2021, this study utilizes the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model estimate and predict the occurrence of meningitis occurrences. Findings frm the study revealed that the ARIMA(1,1,0) model emerged as the optimal fit, capturing the seasonal patterns and temporal trends in meningitis cases. This study recommends the integration of ARIMA-based forecasting into Nigeria’s public health strategies to strengthen early warning systems, optimize resource deployment, and enable more proactive responses during high-risk periods.

Abstract

Nigeria, being a developing country and by its limited resources, priority must be placed on deaths due to ill-health-related research. This study aims to investigate the temporal pattern and forecast mortality associated with Alzheimer’s disease and meningitis using ARIMA model techniques. Results showed that the best fitted for the Alzheimer series is the ARIMA (1, 2, 0) model and the best for the meningitis series is the ARIMA(1,1,0) model. The forecasted values revealed that there will be an inconsistent slight decrease in meningitis deaths while there will be an increase in Alzheimer's deaths over the years. For meningitis, the predicted deaths for 2020, 2021, and 2022 respectively, were 45401, 45216, and 45287, and their 95% confidence intervals were obtained. For Alzheimer's, predicted deaths for 2020, 2021, and 2022 respectively, are 12472, 12832, and 13191, and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals were also obtained. Diagnostic checks for the predictive models were carried out and assumptions were sastisfied.

Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of cooperative learning strategy on secondary school students' academic achievement in physics. Guided by two research questions and three hypotheses, the study employed a quasi-experimental design and was conducted with a sample of 60 Senior Secondary School year two (SS2) physics students from Government Senior Secondary School Girei, Adamawa State. The Physics Achievement Test (PAT) was used to collect data, which were then analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results showed a significant mean score difference of 13.78333 (p < 0.001) favoring the cooperative learning group over the conventional group. Gender differences were significant in the conventional group (t-statistic = -20.696, p < 0.001), with males scoring higher, but not in the cooperative group (t-statistic = -35.658, p = 0.425). Thus, cooperative learning appears to reduce the gender gap in physics achievement. It is recommended that workshops be held to train teachers on effective cooperative learning strategies.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between board characteristics and financial performance of listed oil and gas firms in Nigeria, highlighting the gap in existing literature on the topic. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of board independence, board size, and gender diversity on financial performance. A sample of three listed oil and gas firms on the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) was selected, and secondary data from annual financial statements for 2010-2021 were analyzed using panel regression and correlation analysis. The findings reveal that female board members have a positive and significant impact on financial performance, while board independence and board size have a positive but insignificant impact. The study concludes that gender diversity on boards is a key factor in driving financial success, and recommends increasing the number of female board members to improve financial performance. The results contribute to the understanding of the relationship between board characteristics and financial performance in the Nigerian oil and gas industry.

Abstract

This research investigates foreign direct investment (FDI) impact on the unemployment rate (UPR) in Nigeria by employing an Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model. The study made use of data from the period 1985-2021. Initial assessment of the data involved the application of rolling correlation to test the significance of signals between FDI and UPR. Subsequently, the research employs the ARDL bounds test methodology to examine cointegration among FDI and UPR. Additionally, an Error Correction Model (ECM) is utilized to explore the causal relationship between these economic variables in the short run. The Augmented Dickey Fuller unit root test suggests that the variables attain stationarity at first differences (I(1)). The findings indicate that at 5% FDI significantly impacted on UPR in the long run but not in the short run where it was significant at 10%. Also, the selected best fitted model for the sampled period is ARDL(1, 1) but the plot of the cumulative sum squared chart showed that the parameter estimates were unstable for the sampled period. The results suggest more investment in FDI is necessary for reducing Nigeria unemployment rate in the long run and stabilizing it in the short run.
