Abstract

The phenomenon of non-voting (golput) or voter abstention in elections presents a significant challenge to democracy in Indonesia, including in the 2024 Mandailing Natal Regional Election. Low political participation can undermine the legitimacy of elected governments and hinder regional development processes. In the context of Islam, political participation can be viewed as part of the social responsibility taught in the Qur'an, which emphasizes the importance of deliberation, justice, and trustworthiness in societal life. This study employs a qualitative-descriptive approach with data collected through in-depth interviews with non-participating voters in the 2024 Mandailing Natal Regional Election and secondary data analysis from reports by the General Election Commission (KPU) and relevant literature. The Qur'anic perspective is examined using the thematic interpretation (maudhu’i) method, tracing verses related to political participation. The study finds that the main factors driving non-voting in Mandailing Natal include: (1) public distrust in candidates perceived as incapable of bringing change, (2) political apathy due to money politics, and (3) limited understanding of the importance of political participation in Islam. From the Qur'anic perspective, abstention can be considered contrary to the principle of shura (deliberation), as stated in QS. Ash-Shura (42:38), and the obligation to uphold justice in QS. An-Nisa (4:58).

Abstract

Abstract

Mandoa Asyura is a tradition practiced by the community, passed down from generation to generation on the 10th of Muharram. This tradition is considered obligatory as a form of respect for the month of Muharram, especially on the day of Ashura. The community also believes that this tradition is directly based on the Prophet's hadith, which commands fasting. However, the implementation of this tradition is not limited to the Sunnah fast; the community also carries out various traditional rituals. This research is a study of Living Hadith using qualitative methods and a phenomenological approach. The findings indicate that Mandoa Asyura originated from the teachings of Syaikh Burhanuddin, a scholar who spread Islam in West Sumatra, and is practiced as a form of respect for the month of Muharram, which is rich in historical significance, religious values, and social aspects. The community also believes that this tradition holds spiritual wisdom for Muslims, such as the Apam cake, which is interpreted as the umbrella of Siti Fatimah and a protector for those who perform Mandoa Asyura on the Day of Judgment. The two boiled eggs symbolize the acceptance of the repentance of Prophet Adam and Hawa, and the stir-fried fern symbolizes simplicity. Other findings show that the practice of Mandoa Asyura by the community serves as a means of drawing closer to Allah SWT, reflecting on the events of Ashura, and as a form of self-introspection in leading a righteous life.

Abstract

This study explores the understanding of patriarchy in the interpretation of Q.S. An-Nisa:34 and examines its implications for the declining marriage trend in Indonesia. The interpretation of Q.S. An-Nisa:34 is often seen as supporting patriarchal values, which significantly impact social structures and gender perceptions. With social changes, Indonesia has experienced a decline in marriage trends, which may be influenced by more egalitarian religious interpretations. This study aims to understand how the verse is interpreted in society and how this understanding contributes to the declining marriage trend This research uses a qualitative approach with the maudhu'i method and a little touch of hermeneutics. It interprets Q.S an-Nisa':34 by putting forward the views of the mufassir. The findings show that the interpretation of Q.S. An-Nisa:34 is understood as a basis in the household where men are qawwam (leaders or protectors). This means that there is a big task that men must do, namely providing for their wives and children. If the task of earning a living is not done, then the nature of leadership is lost. The misunderstanding of Q.S. An-Nisa:34 contributes to the changing perception of marriage, which in turn affects marriage trends in Indonesia.
