Abstract

The inflammatory stage is a normal phase of wound healing; however, inflammation can become chronic and lasts for months or years. This is a post-test with control group design study, divided with 20 male white rats into 4 groups: control group (K), treatment group 1 (P1), treatment group 2 (P2), and treatment group 3 (P3). Lemongrass leaf extract gel, simplicia leaves, stems, and roots of citronella were extracted by maceration using a 1:5 ratio of simplicia to solvent. Gel was applied twice a day (morning and evening) to each group, adhering the formulation. Macroscopic observations were made to assess the wound condition and incision length. The length of the incision wound was measured using a ruler every two days for a span of fourteen days. As the sample size was less than 50, a normality test was performed using the Shapiro-Wilk test, followed by a One-way ANOVA and a Post Hoc test. The study found that wound healing was slowest in the control group but faster in the groups treated with 10% and 15% lemongrass leaf extract. Secondary metabolites at a concentration of 15% had a positive impact on wound healing, whereas at lower concentrations, they only inhibited microorganisms, making them less effective for wound healing.

Abstract

The use of cotton buds is considered to be able to cause cerumen impaction in the external ear canal. However, the use of cotton buds in Indonesia is still quite high. This study aims to examines the relationship between the use of cotton buds and the incidence of cerumen obturans. This study used a cross-sectional study design involving 56 respondents who routinely use cotton buds. Based on the study, a significant relationship was obtained between the frequency and depth (p-value 0.026 and p-value 0.008) of cotton bud use and the incidence of cerumen obturans. Students who frequently use cotton buds have a 5.625 times greater risk of experiencing cerumen obturans compared to those who rarely use them. Students who use cotton buds up to the pars osseus (2/3 of the inner ear canal) have a 4.444 times greater risk of experiencing cerumen obturans compared to those who only use cotton buds up to the pars cartilaginosa (1/3 of the outer ear canal). In conclusion, health education programs regarding the use of cotton buds need to be developed to increase awareness of how to maintain safe and effective ear hygiene.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between earphone use and hearing impairment among 2022 cohort students of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Prima Indonesia. The research employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 37 respondents were selected based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria, including being an active 2022 cohort student, using earphones, and consenting to undergo a pure-tone audiometry test. Data were collected through questionnaires and audiometry examinations, then analyzed using SPSS with normality tests and presented in distribution tables. The results indicate that the majority of respondents were female (78.4%) within the age range of 20–22 years, with most using earphones 1–3 days per week, for 1–3 hours, and at an intensity level below 60%. Audiometric findings revealed that 89.2% of respondents had normal hearing, while 10.8% experienced mild sensorineural hearing loss. These findings suggest that although most respondents remain within the normal category, there is an indication of hearing impairment among students who excessively use earphones. Therefore, this study emphasizes the importance of awareness among students to maintain hearing health by limiting both the duration and volume of earphone usage.

Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus, a gram-positive bacterium, is the causative agent of diabetic foot. Traditional medicine using plants needs much further research, especially for wound healing in diabetes mellitus patients. This study is an experimental laboratory investigation on the efficacy of Gotu kola (Centella asiatica) leaf extract against wound-isolated Staphylococcus aureus. Gotu kola leaf extract (12.5%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%), cefixime suspension (positive control), and sterile distilled water were tested. The results of the research showed the formation of an inhibitory zone from testing Gotu kola leaf extract against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, where the average inhibitory zone was at concentrations of 12.5% (7.2 mm), 25% (11 mm), 50% (13.7 mm), 75% (14 .3 mm), and 100% (19.5 mm). The higher the concentration used, the larger the inhibition zone formed. Research shows that Gotu kola leaves' active substances inhibit energy formation, nucleic acid formation, cell membrane permeability, structure and function, and membrane protein lysis and damage.

Abstract

Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media (CSOM) is a chronic middle ear infection characterized by tympanic membrane perforation and continuous or recurrent ear discharge. This condition can cause hearing loss if not properly treated. This study aims to determine the relationship between Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media and hearing loss in patients at the ENT Clinic of Royal Prima Hospital Medan. This research is an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design conducted on 32 patients who met the inclusion criteria. Data were obtained from medical records and pure-tone audiometry results to determine the type and degree of hearing loss. The results showed that most patients experienced conductive hearing loss, with 23 individuals (71.9%), and the most common degree of hearing loss found was mild hearing loss, with 15 individuals (46.9%). The results of the Chi-Square test showed a significant relationship between CSOM and hearing loss (p = 0.012). The recommendation of this study emphasizes the importance of early detection, consulting a doctor for further management, and receiving adequate treatment, as hearing loss can affect communication ability and the quality of life of the sufferers.
