Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the level of knowledge and personal hygiene behavior of adolescent girls during menstruation in Tuntungan II Village, Pancur Batu District, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra. Through a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional research design, data was collected from 30 young women via questionnaire on November 11 2023. The results showed that the majority of respondents had a good (53.3%) and sufficient (40%) level of knowledge about personal hygiene. during menstruation, with only 6.7% having a poor level of knowledge. In terms of personal hygiene behavior, the majority of respondents showed good behavior (83.3%), while 13.4% rated their behavior as adequate, and only 3.3% had poor behavior. Based on these findings, it is recommended to increase personal hygiene education, especially regarding menstruation, both through formal education in schools and through outreach campaigns in the community. It is necessary to provide more comprehensive material and increase the accessibility of information through the use of the internet and digital resources. Apart from that, supporting families in an active role in providing education to young women through seminars or family discussion groups can also help build a shared understanding of the importance of personal hygiene during menstruation. It is hoped that these steps can improve the reproductive health of young women in Tuntungan II Village and its surroundings.

Abstract

Abstract

Malaria is a communicable disease that remains a significant public health problem in Indonesia and can be fatal. University students, as a productive age group, play an important role in disease prevention efforts. This study aims to analyze the habits of using mosquito repellent as a preventive measure against malaria mosquito bites among students of the Faculty of Public Health at UINSU Tuntungan. This research employed a quantitative approach with a descriptive design. The sample size of 101 respondents was determined using the Slovin formula from a population of 442 students with a 10% margin of error. Primary data were collected through an online questionnaire. The results showed that 62.4% of students used mosquito repellent, yet 69.3% still experienced mosquito bites within the past week. Most used repellents daily (39.6%) and in the bedroom (82.2%), with spray repellents being the most common choice (45.5%). These findings indicate that although awareness of repellent use is relatively high, consistency in usage and selecting effective products need to be improved to support optimal malaria prevention.

Abstract

Physical water pollution has become a serious environmental problem, primarily caused by domestic and livestock waste being directly discharged into rivers. This type of pollution is characterized by changes in the physical properties of water, such as color, odor, taste, and turbidity. This study aims to describe the community’s knowledge regarding river water pollution in Tanjung Selamat Village, Deli Serdang Regency. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques including interviews, observation, and documentation. The research informants consisted of 5 people, including 1 head of the neighborhood, 2 residents living along the riverbanks, and 2 street vendors operating near the river in Tanjung Selamat Village. The results showed that the level of community knowledge regarding water pollution is still low, as indicated by the ongoing practice of disposing of domestic waste directly into the river, which has led to physical water pollution in the area. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct continuous outreach, environmental education, and counseling programs for the community, particularly those residing near the river. It is expected that by increasing public awareness and knowledge, efforts to maintain the cleanliness of rivers in Tanjung Selamat Village, Deli Serdang, can be realized.

Abstract

Management of hazardous and toxic medical waste (B3) in hospitals is an important aspect in efforts to maintain environmental safety and public health. This study aims to determine the flow of B3 medical waste management at Mental Hospital X, Medan City, which includes the stages of waste sorting, storage, and transportation. This type of research is descriptive observational with a cross-sectional approach, using secondary data from the Environmental Sanitation Installation for the period January–September 2025. The results of the study indicate that the overall management of B3 medical waste is not optimal and does not meet standards. The sorting stage has not been carried out based on the type of waste, where all waste (sharp, soft, pharmaceutical) is mixed without labeling. The storage stage at the Temporary Storage Place (TPS) for B3 medical waste also does not meet design requirements, such as the building is not closed, not watertight, not equipped with hazard symbols, and emergency facilities. Although transportation has collaborated with a licensed third party (PT X), the risk remains due to the transported waste being mixed and not properly sorted. In conclusion, Mental Hospital X has critical non-conformities in the management of B3 medical waste. Therefore, fundamental improvements, especially in sorting at source and renovation of TPS, are urgent to reduce the risk of contamination and environmental impacts.
