Abstract

Introduction: Violence in educational settings is a critical issue worldwide, particularly in Indonesia. Schools, as environments for learning and socialization, should be safe spaces, yet violence remains prevalent and often unaddressed. This community service project aimed to tackle this issue by providing a targeted counseling program for junior high school students in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara. Objective: The program aimed to raise awareness about violence, enhance students' understanding of its types and impacts, and equip them with skills to prevent and address violence. The project sought to empower students to take proactive steps in creating a safer school environment. Method: Conducted on December 10, 2024, at SMPN 11 Kupang, the program involved 80 students from grades VII to IX. Students were selected based on recommendations from counseling teachers. The program included a presentation on violence, followed by group discussions and simulations. Effectiveness was measured using pre-test and post-test questionnaires to assess changes in students’ knowledge and confidence. Results: Significant improvement was observed. Before the session, only 40% of students could define violence correctly, while 88% did afterward. Confidence in reporting violence increased from 50% to 90%. Group discussions also revealed a heightened awareness of creating a supportive school environment. Conclusion: The program successfully enhanced students’ knowledge and confidence in addressing violence, highlighting the importance of educational interventions. Future programs should incorporate parental involvement to ensure sustained impact.

Abstract

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant public health issue, particularly in developing countries, due to low treatment adherence, which can lead to drug resistance and treatment failure. Nurses play a critical role in enhancing medication adherence among pulmonary TB patients through education, monitoring, and emotional support. Objective: This study aims to explore the role of nurses in improving medication adherence among pulmonary tuberculosis patients using a phenomenological approach. Method: This qualitative study employed a phenomenological design to understand the lived experiences of nurses A total of 10 nurses from Sikumana Health Center in Kupang City, East Nusa Tenggara, who had worked for at least one year in TB treatment units, were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: The findings revealed that nurses play a central role in patient education through one-on-one counseling, group discussions, and the provision of educational materials. Adherence monitoring was conducted through home visits and follow-up appointments, accompanied by emotional support and encouragement. Furthermore, nurses collaborated closely with patients' families and community health workers to foster a supportive environment that promotes treatment success. Three main themes emerged: patient education and counseling, monitoring and emotional support, and collaboration with families and communities. Conclusion: Nurses at Sikumana Health Center play a strategic role in improving medication adherence among pulmonary TB patients through educational efforts, active monitoring, and psychosocial support. Strengthening nurses' capacity and implementing supportive policies are essential to enhance treatment outcomes and prevent drug resistance.

Abstract

Background & Objective: Hallucinations are a form of perceptual disturbance commonly experienced by patients with mental disorders, which impact the quality of life for both the patients and the families who care for them. The objective of this study is to deeply explore the experiences of families caring for patients with hallucinations at Naimata Regional Mental Health Hospital. Method: This study employs a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design. The population consists of families who have a family member suffering from a mental disorder involving hallucinations. The sample includes twelve participants, selected using purposive sampling. Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews guided by a semi-structured interview protocol. The data were presented in the form of thematic narratives and analyzed using thematic analysis, which included the processes of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The research instruments used were the interview guidelines and a voice recording device. Results: The findings of the study indicate that families experience psychological burdens such as stress, fear, and helplessness, as well as social pressure due to societal stigma. Despite these challenges, families continue to play a crucial role in providing emotional, physical, and social support to the patients. Additionally, support from healthcare providers and the surrounding community significantly aids the caregiving process. Conclusion: This study concludes that the experience of families caring for patients with hallucinations is highly complex and requires mental, emotional, and social readiness. Active interventions involving families are necessary to improve the quality of patient care and the well-being of families in facing these challenges.

Abstract

Background & Objectives: The advancement of information and communication technologies, especially social media, has significantly impacted daily life, particularly among adolescents. This age group is particularly vulnerable to mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, and stress due to excessive social media use. This study aims to investigate the relationship between social media use and mental health among adolescents at SMP Negeri 11 Kupang. Methods: This quantitative research adopts a cross-sectional design. The population consists of all students at SMP Negeri 11 Kupang. A sample of 100 students was randomly selected. Data was collected via questionnaires that assessed the frequency and intensity of social media use, as well as mental health indicators (anxiety, depression, stress). Data analysis was performed using descriptive and inferential statistics, specifically Pearson correlation tests. Results: There is a significant relationship between the frequency and duration of social media use and levels of anxiety, depression, and stress in students. Sixty percent of students who use social media for more than 4 hours a day show higher levels of mental health symptoms compared to those who use it less than 2 hours per day. Conclusion: Excessive social media use has a negative impact on adolescent mental health. Therefore, it is necessary to provide education and supervision from both parents and schools on the healthy and wise use of social media.
