Abstract

Spices are known for its health beneficial effect beside its function as flavouring and condiment. This study aimed to screen immunostimulant activities of 12 underutilized species of Zingiberaceae grown in Indonesia. The compound associated with immunostimulant activity in the most active sample was identified by linking the chromatogram profile of hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, methanol, and water fractions of the selected spices to its activity using orthogonal projection to the least square (OPLS) analysis, followed by LC-MS characterization. The result showed that Alpinia malaccensis and Zingiber ottensii had the highest lymphocyte cell proliferation index (SI) at concentrations of 400 ppm. A. malaccensis was chosen for the next step. The results of OPLS analysis showed that the retention time interval which strongly correlated with the immunostimulant activity was 27.0 – 28.5 minutes, which were abundant in methanol fraction. The mass spectra analysis of methanol fraction using UHPLC-HRMS showed that the respective retention time was attributed to flavokawain B. This compound was reported to increase rat splenocyte proliferation in vivo.

Abstract

This study examines the religious guidance of converts at Pesantren Mualaf Indonesia Dompet Dhuafa through the frameworks of Max Heirich’s conversion theory and Glock and Stark’s religiosity theory. Heirich’s theory is applied to analyze the transformation of spiritual identity and commitment among converts within the pesantren environment. Meanwhile, Glock and Stark’s theory is used to assess the dimensions of belief, practice, experience, and affective religiosity of the converts. The findings indicate that the pesantren's comprehensive approach and intensive support significantly enhance the religiosity and spiritual integration of the converts. This research provides valuable insights into the effectiveness of religious guidance methods in strengthening the religious identity and commitment of new Muslims in the pesantren context.

Abstract

This study optimized chitin extraction into chitosan from mangrove crab shells using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) approach. Three independent factors were used: NaOH concentration (A), deacetylation temperature (B), and deacetylation time (C) at five levels (-α, -1, 0, +1, α). The NaOH concentration ranged from 43.2% to 78.8%, the deacetylation temperature ranged from 83.2°C to 116.8°C, and the deacetylation time ranged from 0.4 hours to 3.6 hours. The dependent variables were yield (Y1), degree of deacetylation (Y2), intrinsic viscosity (Y3), and molecular weight (Y4). The results of chitin deacetylation to chitosan optimization using the Design Expert program with the RSM approach led to 42 optimization formulas. The formula with the highest desirability value of 0.927 was the extraction condition using a 50% NaOH concentration, 110°C deacetylation temperature, and 1 hour deacetylation time. Chitosan obtained under these extraction conditions yielded 33.61%, a deacetylation degree of 79.2%, an intrinsic viscosity of 34.96 ml/g, and a molecular weight of 9.25 kDa. The deacetylation of the chitosan produced met the quality standards from Protan Laboratory, as deacetylation was ≥70%.

Abstract

Abstract

The study discovering chemical compounds of black bangle (Zingiber ottensii Val.), which is a member of Zingiberaceae family, is rather scarce. This research aimed to determine the composition of volatile dan non-volatile compounds of the rhizome. The volatile compound was analyzed using solid phase microextraction gas chromatography mass spectrometry (SPME GC-MS), while non-volatile compound was determined by Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS). The experiment by SPME GC-MS successfully identified 31 compounds with monoterpenes showing the most abundant group at 54 %. The main volatile compounds are β-Phellandrene, β-pinene, γ-Terpinene and α-pinene, then followed by sesquiterpene and terpene, namely humulene and terpinen-4-ol, respectively. Furthermore, analysis using UHPLC-HRMS detected 37 compounds with some pre dominant compounds, i.e. zerumbone, choline, isoleucine, phenylalanine, afzelin and malic acid. These findings indicate that black bangle rhizome is rich in various volatile and non-volatile compounds, especially terpenoid, flavonoid, amino acid and malic acid, some of which have certain bioactivities.
