Abstract

One of the assimilation policy implementations during the New Order era was prohibiting the display of Chinese traditions and culture in public. This discriminatory policy ended in the Abdurahman Wahid Presidential era, marked by the revocation of Presidential Instruction No. 14 of 1967 through Presidential Decree No. 6 of 2000. The Chinese community regained the rights to publicly practice their religion, traditions and culture. This study investigates the forms of Surakarta Chinese community’s cultural recontestation after this revocation. This study uses historical method. Primary sources include archives of Inpres No. 14 of 1967 and no. 26 of 1998, Kepres No.6 of 2000 and interview data. The results show that after the revocation of Inpres No. 14 of 1967, the Surakarta Chinese community regained the freedom to practice their religion, traditions, and culture in public, such as praying at the temple, holding Grebeg Sudiro Festival during the Chinese New Year, revitalizing Balong Chinatown village while maintaining typical Chinese architecture, increasing the number of temples, and making Kalipepe River Bandar in Balong Chinatown village as a tourist destination. This study concludes that the Chinese community in the reformation era has regained their space for cultural contestation in public.

The first political movement by NU pesantren ulama during this era was established and raised Partai Kebangkitan Bangsa (PKB) just before 1999 national election. Their purpose by establishing new party was to put their representatives in government (legislative and executive). The fact that happened after NU pesantren ulama returned in politic was not good. These NU pesantren ulama had forgotten their main role and tasks in socio-religious and moslem community. Because of that fact in the beginning of 2004 election the majority of NU pesantren ulama in this region returned to their professionalism which standing neutral above their political interest.

Abstract

Siswodipuran Subdistrict, located in Boyolali Regency, Central Java, is home to a number of historical colonial-era buildings that have yet to be systematically documented. A lack of public and governmental awareness and understanding regarding the historical value and economic potential of these heritage structures poses a significant challenge. This community engagement program aims to support the preservation and visual dissemination of these colonial buildings through digital media as a means of education, research, and strengthening local identity. The methods employed include lectures, discussions, guided historical scriptwriting, documentary video production, and online publication. The Social History Research Group of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Sebelas Maret, in collaboration with community partners and the local government, produced a documentary video and media publications highlighting the historical potential of the Siswodipuran area. The outcomes of this program include popular articles, educational videos on YouTube, and increased community participation in cultural heritage preservation. It is expected that this initiative can serve as a model for local historical documentation and encourage the utilization of historical buildings as cultural and economic assets for the community.
