Abstract

Social Sciences (IPS) learning in SD/MI has an important role in building students' understanding of social, national and state life. One effective approach in learning social studies is to utilize the surrounding environment as a learning resource. This article aims to examine the use of the surrounding environment as a medium for social studies learning in SD/MI through literature studies. The surrounding environment, whether physical, social or cultural, has great potential to increase the relevance and activeness of learning. Utilization of the environment can be done through direct observation, case studies, or simulated situations that reflect students' daily lives. The results of the study show that using the surrounding environment as a learning resource can increase student motivation, develop critical thinking skills, and enrich contextual learning experiences. However, its use requires careful planning by teachers, including the preparation of appropriate evaluation methods and instruments. Thus, the integration of the environment as a social studies learning resource is able to create more meaningful, relevant and contextual learning for elementary/MI students.

Abstract

Bullying remains a significant concern in educational settings, negatively affecting students’ academic performance, motivation, mental health, and social relationships. This study aimed to examine students’ understanding of bullying including its definition, forms, impacts, and preventive strategies and to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational intervention in promoting a supportive learning environment. The intervention was conducted with students of Junior High School Swasta Karyawan Turangi by real work lecture students from State Islamic University of North Sumatra in 2025. The program involved a structured presentation, interactive discussions, and a comprehension assessment through an ice-breaking ball-toss activity combined with singing. Results indicated that some students had experienced bullying, particularly in the form of physical ridicule or verbal insults, while others reported no such experiences. The intervention successfully enhanced students’ knowledge about bullying and fostered collective awareness regarding the importance of maintaining a safe, bullying-free learning environment. These findings underscore the need for systematic educational programs to prevent bullying in schools.
