Abstract

Due to growing environmental awareness, governments and people all over the world started to show concern and place importance on energy efficiency. The transformation from fossil-fuelled energy to renewable energy has been attracting attention and has become the solution that is expected to be more sustainable. This immense potential brings a new idea and innovation for automakers to adopt green technology by creating electric vehicles (EVs). Consequently, the electric vehicle industry has led many automakers, including Japan, to compete in order to dominate the market in Southeast Asia. As one of the longest-running automakers, Japan is unexpectedly left behind and surpassed by other competitors such as China and South Korea. This article aims to identify the policies and strategies Japan implemented to keep up with the competition. The descriptive qualitative method is used to analyse the concept of competitive advantage and government policies. The result shows that Japan implemented both economic and political strategies based on costs and differentiation, as a way to achieve its competitive advantage in the EVs market in Southeast Asia.

Abstract

Abstract

In 2025, the Trump administration implemented sweeping tariff measures as part of its "America First" trade agenda. While aimed broadly at correcting trade imbalances, these policies have had significant ripple effects on Middle Eastern economies, particularly in the Gulf. The objective is to examine how the Trump administration’s tariff regime constitutes a deliberate exercise in economic statecraft and how Gulf states are responding to preserve economic sovereignty and geopolitical relevance. The methodology involves qualitative research method and collecting the data through documents. The paper distinguishes the U.S. tariff regime through the lens of economic coercion, categorizing these tariffs as strategic maneuvers rather than mere economic adjustments. The results show Gulf states responded with financial market adjustments, export disruptions, and accelerated economic diversification, regional alliances, and hedging strategies. This redefines U.S.–Middle East economic relations, with Gulf states increasingly asserting strategic autonomy amid shifting global power dynamics. The article concludes by assessing the broader geopolitical implications of this evolving trade confrontation for future U.S. engagement in the region.

Abstract

This paper presents a rigorous comparative study of the Islamic Caliphate and the Vatican City State, which operates under the governance of the Roman Catholic Church. Both institutions are anchored in authoritative theological doctrine, yet their historical evolution, mechanisms of legitimation, and global reception have unfolded in sharply contrasting manners. The Caliphate, conceived as the apex of Islamic authority uniting political and spiritual oversight, underwent a sequence of crises, culminating in the formal abolition in 1924, resulting in an enduring contest over its contemporary significance. The Vatican, by contrast, has displayed remarkable durability, its papal leadership securing a distinctive role in secular diplomacy and international governance, sustained by a coherent apparatus that transcends the territorial confines. The core finding is that the Vatican’s enduring stability stems from its successful transformation of theological mandate into widely recognized diplomatic legitimacy and transnational soft power. This contrasts with the Caliphate’s decline, which was accelerated by its structural entanglement with territorial governance and military power, leading to perceptions of it as an anachronism. This study contributes a novel cross-civilizational analytical template, treating both entities as theocratic formations. It compares their historical processes, modes of theological authority, and patterns of political reception within their respective polities. The principal innovation resides in this comparative frame, which illuminates how religion is mobilized as institutional power and addresses the contrasting degrees of global endorsement each system receives.Employing a qualitative, descriptive-analytical framework grounded in a multiple case study methodology, this inquiry seeks to advance religious political theory by unraveling the nuanced interplay between religious institutions and the apparatus of the state.

Abstract

This research investigates how agricultural commodity trading companies formulate business strategies in response to pandemics and geopolitical conflicts. Using ADM (Archer Daniels Midland Company) as a case study, the study explores three key strategies: supply chain diversification, new market expansion, and risk mitigation. The research method involved analyzing ADM's annual reports and strategic actions during the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing geopolitical conflicts. The theoretical framework is based on the concept of economics of commodity trading firms (Pirrong, 2014, 2015) and strategic management. The findings reveal that ADM effectively diversified its supply chain by securing raw materials from multiple global sources and investing in joint ventures and strategic partnerships. The company expanded into new markets through acquisitions and collaborations, thus broadening its business portfolio beyond agricultural commodities. Additionally, ADM's enterprise risk management (ERM) program helped mitigate risks related to operational efficiency, cyber-attacks, and geopolitical disruptions. The study concludes that ADM's comprehensive strategies not only minimized the adverse effects of external shocks but also positioned the company for sustainable growth. These strategies can serve as benchmarks for other companies in the agricultural sector to enhance resilience and contribute to sustainable development goals.

Abstract

The parliamentary system in Eastern Central Europe has been known for its authoritarianism, with parliaments being subordinated to communist leadership and parties, as seen in Poland. The decline of democracy in Poland reached its peak when the conservative party was in power, controlling the legislative and judiciary in this former communist country. Corruption and social inequality threatened modern democracy, leading to protests and criticism from the people. The ruling party mainly focused on economic and political power in the name of citizens, leading to criticism even from the media. The study aims to examine the decline of democracy and parliaments in eastern central Europe in Poland. The study uses a case study and qualitative approach to identify the factors behind the decline of democracy in Poland. The main issues were the credibility of state institutions and the lack of media freedom, in addition to corruption. The political change in Poland and increasing populism led to the decline of democracy, which continued to receive criticism even from the media.
