Abstract

Abstract

Medical technological advancements have revealed previously unknown anatomical features in the nasal cavity known as tubarial glands. However, many questions remain unanswered concerning these glands. Through this systematic review, we sought to analyze the tubarial glands, including their major discovery, anatomical and histological features, and clinical significance. Articles were identified according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, with data collected from Scopus, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, and PubMed until September 2024. Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) were utilized with various terminology: "tubarial gland*", "tubarial salivary gland*", and "radiotherapy”. The inclusion criteria were: (1) resources categorized as original research reports, case reports, case studies, letters to the editor, brief communications, commentaries, editorials, and news; (2) publications with accessible full text; and (3) articles providing information on the tubarial glands. The exclusion criteria were: (1) papers categorized as systematic reviews, meta-analyses, or bibliometric analyses; and (2) articles not published in English. The identification yielded 37 resources from around the world, including 19 original research reports (51.3%), 3 case reports (8.1%), 6 letters to the editor (16.2%), 2 brief communications (5.4%), 7 commentaries (18.9%), 1 editorial (2.7%), and 1 news article (2.7%). The research subjects comprised 1 healthy patient (2.7%) out of 26 subjects, 12 prostate cancer patients (32.4%) out of 612 subjects, 3 head and neck cancer patients (8.1%) out of 38 subjects, 1 nasopharyngeal carcinoma patient (2.7%) out of 240 subjects, 1 Sjögren's syndrome patient (2.7%) out of 29 subjects, 1 patient with oncocytic papillary cystadenoma (2.7%), and 20 patients with other conditions (54.0%). This systematic review suggests that the newly discovered glands exhibit similar morphological, histological, and physiological properties to salivary glands and may have a function in the lubrication and maintenance of the upper airway.

Abstract

Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) cases in Indonesia continue to increase every year, and malnutrition is identified as one of the causes in increasing susceptibility to disease transmission. Decreased nutritional intake can be assessed through changes in body composition. The initiation of intensive phase tuberculosis therapy is crucial for reducing bacterial growth and preventing recurrence, which can help improve food intake in TB patients. This study aims to determine changes in body composition in tuberculosis patients undergoing intensive phase treatment. This observational cohort study was conducted in Nganjuk Regency, East Java, from December 2023 to July 2024. The research sample consisted of 35 newly diagnosed tuberculosis patients undergoing intensive treatment. The parameters in this study, namely the percentage of fat mass, subcutaneous fat, skeletal mass, and visceral fat levels, were measured before and after two months of intensive treatment. The research results showed a significant increase in fat mass and visceral fat (p≤0.05). Meanwhile, the body mass index and fat-free mass showed an increase but were not significant (p>0.05). Overall, this study showed an improvement in body composition in tuberculosis patients after undergoing intensive phase treatment.

Abstract

Abstract—Background: Insomnia is a sleep disorder characterized by difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep with a minimum duration of symptoms of 1 month. A body that does not get quality sleep can affect a person's physical, mental health, thinking and daily functioning. This can cause a decrease in the quality of life of insomnia sufferers. Objective: To determine the effect of using VR therapy on changes in quality of life and sleep quality in insomnia sufferers. Methodology: This research uses a true-experimental type of research using a one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample in this study consisted of 30 respondents selected using non-probability sampling techniques and purposive sampling methods. Results: Based on the results of the paired t test and Wilcoxon test for the four domains, it shows a p-value <0.001 which indicates a significant change between the pre-test and post-test in the quality of life of University of Surabaya students. Test results also indicated improvements in sleep quality after the intervention. Conclusion: There are indications of changes in quality of life and quality of sleep after being given VR intervention, characterized by an increase in quality of life and a decrease in the severity of sleep quality for University of Surabaya students aged 18-22 years. Keywords: quality of life, quality of sleep, insomnia, students Abstrak—Latar Belakang: Insomnia merupakan gangguan tidur yang ditandai dengan kesulitan memulai atau mempertahankan tidur dengan rentang waktu gejala minimal selama 1 bulan.
