Abstract

The study aims to describe and analyze the process of learning history and strengthening pacifism characters in Madrasah Aliyah Aceh with data collection locations carried out in Pidie, Banda Aceh, West Aceh, and East Aceh. The subjects in this study were the head of the Madrasah, the teacher of history subjects and the supervisor of the madrasa. Data collection was conducted through interviews, observations, Focus Group Discussions and document studies. The results showed that the process of learning History at Madrasah Aliyah in Aceh had been carried out with several records of findings. There are still teachers who copy and paste in compiling lesson plans without making modifications. Active involvement of students in the history learning process is still lacking. This can be seen from the passivity of students, teachers rarely invite students to discuss, learning is still dominant in one direction and learning that has not been able to involve students' higher-order thinking skills. History teachers do not analyze evaluation instruments caused by the teacher's lack of understanding in conducting question point analysis. Then, the strengthening of pacifism character through history learning at Madrasah Aliyah in Aceh has not been carried out optimally. This happens because pacifism characters have not become priority characters in schools, pacifism character education-based lesson plans have not been implemented, history teachers have not all made lesson plans as a guideline in carrying out learning, history teachers have different educational backgrounds, teacher pedagogic competence and lack of history teacher development activities.

The data were collected from the madrasah heads, history teachers, and school supervisors. The data were collected through interviews, observations, focus group discussions, and studied documents. The results showed that Madrasah Aliyah in Aceh has failed to achieve its obective due to several factors. History teachers follow the standard lesson plans without making the necessary modifications to include elements of pacifism. The students are not actively involved in the learning process and the classes are teacher-centered, thus not supporting higher-order thinking skills. Teachers show a lack of understanding in conducting question point analysis. The elements of pacifism is not sufficiently highlighted in the history classes, thus failing to make optimal use of instilling important social values in the students and use the history subject for character education. Teachers have different educational backgrounds and varying levels of pedagogic competence, thus requiring more specific guidance and training from Madrasah Aliyah Aceh to be able to render this promising approach to history instruction more successful in practice.

Abstract

Madrasah has been integrated into the national education system. This policy pushed the reconstruction of the curriculum regarding the components of religious and general subjects and its implications for madrasah alums. This research aims to examine the impact of the Ministrial Joint Decree on the academic quality of madrasah aliyah alums in South Sulawesi. This qualitative research gathered the data through interviews with the madrasah principals, teachers, and the head of the education division at the Ministry of Religious Affairs of South Sulawesi. This study shows that both state and private Islamic senior high schools in the province applied various strategies to overcome curriculum overload through maximizing learning hours, improving the quality of teachers, and applying boarding school system where learning activities adopt a fullday system. Through such mechanism, that madrasahs produced competitive alums. A further implication for Islamic public and private schools' alums is concerned with the increase in the number of their alums in pursuing education at prominent state universities in Indonesia.
