Abstract

This research aims to be able to answer the question, how is the form and meaning of pastoral care for the marginalized Menangki tribe in the midst of post-conflict life expectations? The focus of the research is directed at the role of the church in pastoring marginalized congregations who live in conditions of trauma, social limitations, and uncertainty due to the conflict they experienced. The main objective of this research is to deeply understand the practice of pastoral care and its impact on the recovery of faith strengthening, and self-actualization of marginalized people in church and community life. The method used is a qualitative approach with a case study research type. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document study of the Kerom Klasis and the GKI Diaspora Skopro congregation that serves the congregation. The results showed that pastoral care can touch the spiritual, emotional, social and cultural aspects, so as to rebuild the life expectancy of marginalized people. Pastoral care is not only a means of spiritual recovery, but also opens space for participation and empowerment in social life. The discussion of this research emphasizes the importance of pastoral theology that sides with those who are excluded, as well as the war of the church as an agent of reconciliation and hope in post-conflict societies.

Abstract

Oil palm expansion in Papua has deepened the deforestation crisis and presents problems that are not only ecological, but also social, cultural, and theological because they are related to changes in indigenous peoples' relations to land, forests, and sources of life. This research aims to formulate a synthesis of Papuan contextual ecotheology by placing land as a relational living space and nature as a creation that must be read in the context of contemporary ecological crises. The research uses a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach based on secondary data from open-access scientific literature relevant to the themes of deforestation, oil palm expansion, indigenous Papuans, relational cosmology, and contextual ecotheology. The analysis process was conducted through literature selection, thematic mapping, and narrative synthesis to identify key patterns of findings. The results show that deforestation due to oil palm expansion in Papua cannot be understood solely as land cover change, but rather as a relational crisis that disrupts indigenous peoples' relationships with land, sago, forests, food, and the wider web of life. This synthesis also shows that Papuan contextual ecotheology needs to be built by integrating creation theology, ecological justice, and local ecological knowledge in order to be able to respond to the reality of extractivism more sensitively and transformatively. This article contributes to the development of ecotheological studies in Indonesia by offering a conceptual framework that places Papua as an important locus for the formation of a theology that is contextual, ecological, and in favor of the dignity of indigenous peoples.

Abstract

Suicide remains a significant global, national, and local concern, including in East Nusa Tenggara (Nusa Tenggara Timur, NTT), a region widely recognized for its strong communal and religious life. The emergence of numerous suicide cases in recent years raises important questions regarding the relationship between social conditions, religious life, and individual vulnerability to suicide. This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of suicide in NTT through a dialogue between Émile Durkheim’s theory of suicide and John Potter’s theological reflection. The study employs a qualitative approach using document analysis of eight suicide cases reported in online media between 2023 and 2026. The data were analyzed descriptively to identify recurring patterns and subsequently interpreted using Durkheim’s concepts of social integration and social regulation, as well as Potter’s reflections on stigma, grace, and pastoral care. The findings indicate that suicide cases in NTT involve various age groups and social backrounds, with male victims constituting the majority. Contributing factors include economic hardship, cultural pressures related to belis, mental health problems, interpersonal relationship issues, and other forms of social vulnerability. The dialogue between Durkheim and Potter demonstrates that suicide in NTT constitutes both a social and a theological issue. These findings highlight the importance of the church in fostering communities characterized by acceptance, accompaniment, and hope as part of pastoral responses to individuals experiencing despair.
