Abstract

Management of dental emergencies focuses on immediate action to relieve pain and preserve injured tissue so that the condition does not get worse. Some of the causes of dental emergencies include pain due to inflammation of the dental nerve, bacterial infections that cause abscesses or swelling, broken or loose teeth due to falls or impacts. Dental emergencies can also occur with dental tools installed in the oral cavity, such as dentures or orthodontic wires, for example broken dentures or sharp orthodontic wires that can cause injuries to the soft tissue in the oral cavity. This empowerment activity aims to improve knowledge and ability to handle oral emergencies. This Community Service Activity was carried out by the Trisakti University Faculty of Dentistry Team for parents of students at Yasporbi I Elementary School, South Jakarta on February 16 2024. The method used was offline counseling using presentations regarding various emergency conditions in dentistry. Counseling was conducted on 13 participants for 60 minutes. Participants' knowledge was assessed with a pre-test and posttest using Google Form. From the results obtained, it can be seen that there has been an increase in the knowledge of the counseling participants by 25% (average pre-test score 8 and average post-test score 10).

Abstract

Dental trauma is often found in children of growing age due to poor psychomotor coordination, making them prone to falls. This can cause damage to the teeth and their supporting tissues, which can interfere with mastication, speech, aesthetics and the eruption of permanent teeth. The management of dental trauma in children is still poorly understood by parents and teachers, therefore an approach is needed regarding the first treatment of trauma to primary teeth. The choice of Community Service target at Kepodang preschool was due to a request from the school principal as the community leader. Education and training activities were carried out on Monday, March 4th 2024 for a total of 22 teachers and parents. The aim of this activity is to increase knowledge, motivate changes in attitudes and behavior in maintaining oral health, and provide learning about first care for trauma in primary teeth. An initial assessment of knowledge and attitudes regarding first care for trauma in primary teeth was carried out through administering a pre-test with multiple choice questions. The material given includes dental and oral health problems, prevention methods, as well as first treatment for trauma in primary teeth by using the power point text, discussion, and a simulation of how to brush teeth with songs. Evaluation was carried out through a post test with multiple choice questions. Evaluation of the post test results shows that there was an increase in test score. The results of this activity recommend continuing this training activity in kindergartens or other elementary schools, especially for teachers and parents

Abstract

Background: The main aim of endodontic treatment is to eliminate bacterial infection in the pulp and to preserve treated teeth in their best condition, restoring the structure and function of healthy teeth. Dental clinicians should be aware that both adequate root canal treatment and post-treatment restoration work in unison to achieve a successful endodontic treatment.  Objective: The purpose of this article is to demonstrate pulpectomy as an endodontic treatment choice for upper premolar and molar permanent teeth with the diagnosis of irreversible pulpitis, followed by the placement of composite onlay on both teeth.  Case report: A 38-year-old woman sought treatment at RSGM-P Universitas Trisakti, complaining of persistent food trapping in her upper left teeth, which contributed to halitosis. The patient noted episodes of throbbing pain associated with those teeth for three months. Intra-oral examination showed a moderate to large cavity on tooth 25 and 26, both reaching the pulp, as confirmed by radiographic examination. At the first visit, pulpectomy was performed on tooth 26 from caries removal, access opening, irrigation, pulp extirpation, artificial wall building with GIC, biomechanical preparation, and obturation. Patient was told to come again one week after to get the same treatment on 25. At her third visit, composite onlay preparation was conducted. After finished, dental impression of tooth 25 and 26 was carried out to be proceed on laboratory. Cementation was scheduled to one week after on the next visit using resin cement. Patient revisited for follow-up after one month of placement with no complaints. Conclusion: One visit pulpectomy was succesfully carried out on tooth 25 and 26 followed by composite onlay restoration.

Abstract

Background: NiTi rotary file is an instrument that famous for its flexible and strong properties. Instrument fracture during preparation due to cyclic fatigue is one of the main causes of rotary file fracture. The geometric shape of a rotary file will determine its resistance properties because it is in direct contact with the root canal wall and will determine its resistance to cyclic fatigue. Objective: This study aims to determine the difference in cyclic fatigue fracture resistance of two heat treated rotary files that have different geometric shape. Methods: The research inserted rotary files with an endomotor operating at 400 rpm and 2.0 torque into artificial stainless steel root canals with a 90-degree curvature and 2 mm diameter, treated with 5.25% NaOCl. It included two groups (flat design and S-Shape), each with 5 samples, and measured the duration of each sample using a stopwatch. Results: This research show that there is a significant difference in time (p<0.05). Conclusion: The flat design rotary file shows stronger resistance to cyclic fatigue fracture compared to the S-Shape rotary file.
