Abstract

Social welfare is a condition that humans strive to achieve a decent life in terms of material, social and spiritual aspects. After World War II, Japan was known as a country that experienced rapid economic and social welfare improvements. In addition, a wide range of Japanese popular culture products such as Manga & Anime, J-Pop, Video Games, and others have also grown and accompanied the established life of Japanese society. Therefore, Japanese popular culture has been supported and can spread to all corners of the world. This situation can indirectly improve the economy and existence of the Japanese state internationally, although, since the 1990s, Japan has experienced a lost decade. This study aims to discover in depth the correlation between the welfare of Japanese society and the development of Japanese popular culture after World War II. This study uses historical and descriptive qualitative methods with a multidisciplinary approach, such as history, social science, and culture. The results of this study show that social welfare is not a factor that can directly relate to or influence the development of Japanese popular culture. Other factors that lead to a marketing strategy and technology utilization, such as talented creators who have been good at finding opportunities, mass media culture, and Japanese government policies can influence the development of Japanese popular culture in domestic and abroad.

This study discusses “The New Cool Japan Strategy” announced by the Japanese government in June 2024. This strategy has outlined a comprehensive plan to expand and revitalize the existing Cool Japan initiative, which aims to promote the attractiveness of Japanese culture around the world, leading to economic growth. However, there are still problems in the existing Cool Japan that need to be addressed, such as the issue of inadequate support for creators, slow digitalization, and lack of targets set for Cool Japan as a whole. This study aims to analyze “The New Cool Japan Strategy” historically to understand more deeply how the Japanese government's efforts to save Japan's economic growth and popular image in the digital era. This study's method is historical research with literature study through a multidisciplinary approach, such as socio-cultural sciences and history. The results of this study show that maximizing the potential of cultural capitalism and soft power is a common way for the Japanese government to save Japan's economic growth and popular image in the digital era. In addition, the specific actions of the new Cool Japan strategy to face future challenges such as accelerating the PDCA cycle, digital transformation, enhancing creator support, addressing piracy, and strengthening public-private collaboration are expected to solve the previous problems and be well implemented.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to find out how the background and inner conflict experienced by jouhatsu actors in Japan are viewed in the context of translation so that Indonesian readers can understand and capture the hidden meaning of the phenomenon. This research uses Newmark's theory of modulation and Venuti's theory of foreignization. The research method used is qualitative research with case studies. The subjects of this research are jouhatsu actors in Japan who were interviewed by the South China Morning Post's youtube channel entitled “Japan's ‘evaporated’ people: Inside an industry that helps people disappear” and CNA titled ‘Vanishing without a trace | Undercover Asia as well as a book titled ’The Vanished: The 'Evaporated People' of Japan in Stories and Photographs.” by Mauger and Remael. This study found that 24 data analyzed by the author in the context of translation were translated using modulation technique and 12 data were translated using footnote technique. The data shows that Newmark's modulation technique is able to translate well the implied meaning hidden in the speaker's statement. Venuti's foreignization strategy is used to analyze the research data from a cultural perspective so that the jouhatsu phenomenon can be well understood by people outside Japan. Footnotes are used to translate words that do not exist in Indonesian. With the techniques of modulation, foreignization, and footnotes, translation becomes not only a process of language transfer, but also a transfer of culture and emotion. Indonesian readers do not just know that someone “disappeared”, but also understand the economic background, social pressure, violence, fear, shame, and regret that drove someone to become a jouhatsu-sha.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a book of oral stories from the traditions of the people of North Sumatra and translate it into Japanese while maintaining the cultural meaning and local nuances. The method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection methods in the form of text analysis and interviews with resource persons who understand traditional stories. Validation was conducted by cultural and linguistic experts to assess the accuracy, readability and cultural context appropriateness of the translations. The translation strategies analyzed refer to Inou and Kawahara's classification, which includes proposition preservation, paraphrasing, deletion, and addition. The results show that these strategies are effective in preserving cultural meaning, especially when combined with contextual adjustments and the use of footnotes. The findings confirm that translating traditional stories requires a strategic approach and continuous validation to maintain the quality and acceptability of the final product. The study concludes that the implementation of appropriate strategies not only aids the preservation of oral traditions in written form, but also expands global access to Indonesia's rich culture, particularly through translation into Japanese languages.
