Abstract

Majority of Turkish society adheres to the Sunni Islamic faith, while the Alevi group has emerged with a different faith. The Alevi are a complex and diverse religious and cultural identity that has undergone numerous changes in its position, outlook and interactions with the rest of Turkish society. Turkish society is not static, the contradictory attitudes taken by Turkish society towards the Alevi community, and the shifting perspectives on Alevi religious life, are often questioned. Their society changes over time due to factors such as political developments, generations and social movements. By 2022, 25 million Alevi people in Turkey will have no legal security. Alevis have faced challenges such as discrimination, unequal treatment and lack of recognition for their unique religious practices. This raises the issue of the Turkish government’s policy in dealing with the problems of the Alevi community, the attitude of Turkish society in dealing with the contradictions of the Alevi community, and the comparison of Alevi beliefs with the beliefs of Turkish society and the impact of Alevi groups on Turkish society. This paper uses a descriptive qualitative research method with data analysis and literature review. The findings of this study are that the Turkish government does not have a structured and official policy on the acceptance or rejection of the Alevi community, and Turkish society is beginning to open up to the understanding of Alevi culture. Despite the differences between Sunni and Alevi Islam, Alevi community is still able to perform their rituals without any hindrance.

Abstract

The use of social media and digital platforms is increasing in da’wah activities. Many studies have not explored the optimal use of technology by da’wah practitioners to reach wider and more diverse audiences or face digital challenges, such as disinformation, the digital divide, and technical skills. This research explores the influence of digital technology on da’wah communication strategies in the modern era using the case study method—data collection through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and analysis of documentation from various digital platforms. Research findings show that social media, video platforms, and podcasts have changed the way preachers preach, allowing preachers to reach a wider and more diverse audience with more interesting and interactive content. In addition, the use of analytical tools to understand audience demographics is very important in increasing the effectiveness of message delivery. However, challenges such as the digital divide and the need for technical skills in content creation were also identified. The results of this research emphasize the need for preachers to receive digital skills training so that messages can be conveyed professionally and attractively. In addition, this research provides practical recommendations for preachers to optimize the use of technology in da’wah activities, including content creation strategies and how to deal with challenges such as misinformation.

Abstract

The article aims to explore the role of the Indonesian Ulama Council in the 2024 election contestation through election posts on Instagram. This study was conducted using the content analysis method. Data sources were obtained from the Indonesian Ulama Council's Instagram account. The data was obtained by observing posts from September 2023 to March 2024. The data obtained was then analyzed with three stages of qualitative analysis: data reduction, data display, and conclusion. Based on the data analysis, this study found that substantially, the election content posted by the Indonesian Ulama Council on Instagram is about peaceful elections and Muslim participation in elections. The study also found that the posting of election-related fatwas by the Indonesian Ulama Council on Instagram aims to raise awareness and encourage Muslims to exercise their voting rights in the election. Based on these findings, election-related posts by the Indonesian Ulama Council on Instagram represent the involvement of religious institutions in political contestation and the embodiment of ideological roles as a driving force for the successful implementation of elections in Indonesia.
