Abstract

Waria also known as transgender women, despite consistent exclusion from society, are becoming increasingly visible in Indonesia during the era of globalization. In recent years, they have gained more popularity by leveraging the rapid development of social media. This study aims to critically examine public perceptions of transgender, using the case of one of Indonesia's most famous transgender figures, Lucinta Luna. The researcher analyses Instagram users’ comments on her account, as a representation of how the public responds to Luna's identity as a transgender. This study utilizes a qualitative approach and thematic analysis as the analytical method. To analyze the data, this research uses Computer-Aided Qualitative Analysis Software (CAQDAS) NVivo 12. Furthermore, this study adopts Hall's theory of 'the other' to critically examine how Indonesians respond to transgenders. This research found that two significant themes emerged from overall Instagram users' comments on Luna's identity, which are negative and positive public perceptions. In both themes, three sub-themes emerged: sarcasm, religious criticism, and sexual harassment in the negative theme, and admiration, comedy, and a supportive attitude in the positive theme.

Abstract

This study explores the application of UTAUT2 in adopting ChatGPT for IELTS preparation, identifying key influencing factors. A scenario-based online survey with 168 Indonesian social media users was analyzed using partial least square-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Findings reveal that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, and habit significantly drive behavioral intention. Users perceive ChatGPT as an effective tool for improving IELTS scores through personalized learning and appreciate its ease of use. Social influence from educators and peers also plays a crucial role, while habitual use reinforces trust in ChatGPT’s reliability. Interestingly, facilitating conditions, hedonic motivation and price value were non-significant. Specifically, cost concerns may be less relevant given ChatGPT’s free-tier accessibility, and hedonic motivation may be secondary in a goal-oriented setting like IELTS preparation. These non-significant results might also be shaped by Indonesia’s collectivist culture, where social influence outweighs individualistic motivations such as enjoyment. These findings suggest that the UTAUT2 model may require contextual adaptation for educational technologies, particularly in settings where functionality and effectiveness outweigh cost considerations. This study highlights the need to prioritize performance, ease of use and social influence to drive AI adoption in education.

Abstract

As integral components of the global movement, both nationalism and globalisation play significant roles in the rise of ethno-nationalism, particularly influenced by the emergence of social media. Today, nationalist populist figures can easily and extensively disseminate their values through various social media platforms, effectively turning this technology into an echo chamber for ethno-nationalist leaders. Their strategy to spread influence often involves promoting xenophobic propaganda narratives that glorify their supreme goals and identity while alienating minorities perceived as threats. This article critically examines the rise of ethno-nationalism, and the crucial role played by social media, focusing on two political parties: the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Germany and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in India. Using qualitative descriptive methods and a case study approach, this research reveals that in both cases, ethno-nationalist leaders utilise Islamophobic populism by alienating Islam and framing Muslims as "the other." Furthermore, social media serves as a critical tool for ethno-nationalist parties to spread their agenda and strengthen connections with their supporters.

Abstract

Digital platforms have transformed political campaign models and created spaces where the boundaries between reality and illusion become blurred. This study analyzes the social media gimmick strategy used by the Prabowo-Gibran pair in the 2024 election, highlighting how the gimmick is not only a tool of political communication, but also builds hyperreality. Using the theoretical framework of simulacra and simulation from Jean Baudrillard, this study reveals how political communication strategies through gimmicks on social media can build a hyperreal image, where campaign elements become more "real" than actual political reality. A descriptive qualitative approach was used to analyze the data obtained from the publication of PT Indonesia Indicator using content analysis. The results of this study show that political gimmicks are not just a strategy to attract the attention of voters, but have developed into a hegemonic instrument that forms a new reality that is independent of the real reality. In this context, democracy faces serious challenges, when political representation relies more on visual appeal and social media narratives, then political substance can be displaced by pseudo-illusions designed to drive and control public opinion.
