Abstract

The prevailing research inadequately explores the pragmatic strategies within courtroom discourse, particularly in non-Western legal systems such as Indonesia. This study embarks on bridging this gap by analyzing pragmatic strategies employed in Ferdy Sambo's plea within the Indonesian legal environment. Utilizing qualitative methods encompassing discourse and pragmatic analysis, this study scrutinizes the deployment of linguistic techniques and pragmatic strategies to meet communicative objectives. The investigation unveils a meticulous utilization of assertive and declarative illocutionary acts, demonstrating a narrative woven with assertiveness, seeking validation and empathy in the claustrophobic courtroom atmosphere. Furthermore, it revealed the significance of understanding the intricate relationship between societal norms, values, and the narrative crafted within a plea, especially in culturally rich contexts like Indonesia. This endeavor enhances the comprehension of the pragmatic strategies in Ferdy Sambo's plea and delineates the broader societal influences that dictate the narrative dynamics within the Indonesian legal discourse. Through this lens, the study contributes substantially to pragmatics, discourse analysis, and legal communication, inviting further nuanced research. With the transitivity system, the writer can find out the characters and messages conveyed in the film through the main character describing her thoughts and feelings. This thesis uses the theory of Systemic Functional Grammar by M. A. K Halliday by using descriptive qualitative method. The data in this study is from the Barbie movie script, which focuses only on the utterances of the main character, Barbie. The results of the analysis showed that in this movie there were all types of transitivity (6 types) processes. The types of transitivity consist of the relational process (140 data) with percentage 44%, material process (79 data) with percentage 25%, mental process (63 data) with percentage 20%, behavioral process (22 data) with percentage 7%, verbal process (11 data) with percentage 3%, and existential process (2 data) with percentage 1%. The relational process is the most common process in this study. Carrier and attribute are the most common participants that appeared in clauses. For circumstance, location is the most common circumstance in clauses, both temporal and spatial location. The relational process indicates that through the role of Barbie, it can be seen this movie provides a detailed explanation of the relationship between one and the other like Barbie's relationship with Ken and also with her creator, Ruth Handler. Abstract

Abstract: Implicit meaning or supplementary meaning of the speaker's speech is revealed by implicature analysis, a technique employed in pragmatics. This research is expected to provide a deeper understanding of implicatures in the Karonese language and can assist in preserving the Karonese language and culture. The research method used in this research is the descriptive-analytical method. The data used in this study were obtained from video recordings of Maba Belo Selambar conversations taken from youtube. Descriptive qualitative analysis was used to analyze the social phenomena in depth and comprehensively, explaining or describing these phenomena in detail. The data analysis would be based on the implications developed by Grice in exploring cooperative communication in conversation and using Jakobson's theory of language function to see the implications of the conversation. The writer found 35 pieces of data that consist of implicacies based on the function of language. After analyzing the data, the researcher finds that the metalinguistic function (15 data) is the most dominant, followed by the comparative function (11 data), the referential function (6 data points), the phonic function (2 data) and the poetic function (1 data). The author found that the use of language functions in metalinguistics was more likely to be used because the speakers on both sides threw structured, ethical language codes at the event.
