Abstract

The prevailing research inadequately explores the pragmatic strategies within courtroom discourse, particularly in non-Western legal systems such as Indonesia. This study embarks on bridging this gap by analyzing pragmatic strategies employed in Ferdy Sambo's plea within the Indonesian legal environment. Utilizing qualitative methods encompassing discourse and pragmatic analysis, this study scrutinizes the deployment of linguistic techniques and pragmatic strategies to meet communicative objectives. The investigation unveils a meticulous utilization of assertive and declarative illocutionary acts, demonstrating a narrative woven with assertiveness, seeking validation and empathy in the claustrophobic courtroom atmosphere. Furthermore, it revealed the significance of understanding the intricate relationship between societal norms, values, and the narrative crafted within a plea, especially in culturally rich contexts like Indonesia. This endeavor enhances the comprehension of the pragmatic strategies in Ferdy Sambo's plea and delineates the broader societal influences that dictate the narrative dynamics within the Indonesian legal discourse. Through this lens, the study contributes substantially to pragmatics, discourse analysis, and legal communication, inviting further nuanced research. Abstract

Abstract. This study explores the phenomenon of code-switching as exhibited by Cinta Laura Kiehl during her guest appearance on Deddy Corbuzier's podcast. The primary aim is to examine the four types of code-switching—intra-sentential switching, inter-sentential switching, tag switching, and establishing continuity switches—using Hoffman's framework. The analysis, based on a specific episode of the podcast sourced from YouTube, aims to determine which type of code-switching is most dominant and explores its implications for bilingual communication. This qualitative research adopts a sociolinguistic perspective to analyze the role of language in interaction and cultural expression within a digital media context. Data were sourced from a specific episode of the podcast, focusing on the linguistic exchanges between Cinta Laura and Deddy Corbuzier. The findings are expected to contribute to a deeper theoretical understanding of bilingual communication and its relationship to identity construction in contemporary media. By isolating Cinta Laura’s linguistic practices, this study provides unique insights into her code-switching patterns and their significance within the Indonesian entertainment industry. The results hold relevance for academic discussions in linguistics and media studies, offering practical implications for educators, students, and researchers alike. Keywords: code-switching, intra-sentential, inter-sentential, tag switching, establishing continuity

Abstract

In everyday life, humans are never separated from communication. One of the tools used to communicate is language. Language has many functions that can be found in various media, one of which is a movie. When watching movie, without realizing it, most people only watch scenes and listen to dialogue conversations in the movie and do not notice how the functions of language are used. This is why this study was conducted. By choosing Mean Girls movie as the object, this study aimed to discover the types of language functions used by the main characters and how language functions were realized in the Mean Girls movie. This study used mixed methods, quantitative and qualitative methods. The data analysis technique consisted of identifying the transcribed dialogues by the main characters, Cady Heron, Regina George, Janis Ian, Gretchen Wieners, and Karen Smith, using Geoffrey Leech's (1981) theory of language functions. The results show that in Mean Girls movie, five language functions are found. Expressive function is the most used which contains 135 utterances, followed by informative function with 90 utterances, directive function with 75 utterances, phatic function with 17 utterances and the least used is aesthetic function with 2 utterances. The realization is that there are five types of language functions, namely the informative function (when the main characters provide some factual information, actions, place, and direction using language that can be understood by the interlocutors without confusion). Directive function (when the main characters asked favour, command, give order, invite, and request, so that the listeners follow the wishes of the main characters). Expressive function (when the main characters use this function to express their feelings and emotions such as amazement, judgment, anger, falling in love, and happiness). Phatic function (when the main characters use this function to maintain a good social relationship with the recipients). And finally, aesthetic function (when the main characters use the function by prioritizing the beauty of language yet the meaning is still conveyed to produce a sensory or emotional experience of the recipients). So, it can be concluded that language functions can be found anywhere, including in the movies and moreover, language functions cannot be avoided from everyday life.

Abstract

This article presents a systematic literature review (SLR) of 20 scholarly studies published between 2020 and 2024 that investigate presupposition in film discourse from a pragmatic lens. The review aims to synthesize dominant presupposition types, theoretical frameworks, pragmatic functions, and genre-specific trends within cinematic language. Existential, factive, and lexical presuppositions are the most frequently employed, shaping character development, narrative cohesion, and cultural framing. Yule’s (1996) typology remains the predominant analytical framework, while animated and dramatic films emerge as the most analyzed genres due to their pedagogical and sociocultural richness. The findings emphasize the role of presupposition as a discourse strategy that conveys implicit meaning and ideological nuance, supporting audience interpretation without explicit exposition. Furthermore, several studies highlight its application in ESL/EFL classrooms to enhance pragmatic competence. Despite the growth in this research area, gaps persist in multimodal analysis and cross-cultural comparisons. This review not only consolidates key insights but also calls for more integrative approaches that consider visual, verbal, and cultural dimensions of cinematic texts. It contributes to advancing pragmatic inquiry and encourages further exploration of presupposition as a dynamic tool in media discourse.
