Abstract

Abstract

This article analyzes the integration of local Hindu cultural values into an Islamic education system in Bali, Indonesia. To collect the data, the researchers adopted observation, interview, and document analysis. After the data were collected, the researchers analyzed them in the light of social construction theory. The results showed that the integration could be explained well from the perspective of social construction. It started with the construction of the integration concept by the founder of the school. The moment of externalization started with the sharing of the concept. Policies on teacher recruitment, curriculum, and social disciplines would have supported the integration. Hindu teachers were recruited to teach at the Islamic school. Some subjects were enriched with points supporting the integration and a set of social disciplines was indoctrinated to the students. This objectivation moment then produced the internationalization of the concepts by the members of the school. Finally, the whole school members could accept and interact with people of other religions in a tolerant manner. The integration itself proved not only that social construction could be done in the education field, but it also gave an example of how to foster tolerance in a country of multi-religion through a multicultural education approach. This was where the research got its significance, i.e. showing the model of education suitable for multi-religious countries to foster tolerant and peaceful living.

Abstract

This paper concisely and analytically presents the history of tasyri', or the formation of Islamic law in the Prophet's era. By using the term "Theo-Prophetic Jurisprudence," this paper also provide a response and rebuttal to the view that Islamic law is a product of Muhammad's jurisprudence. The results of this qualitative research with conceptual and historical approaches indicate that the formation of Islamic law began in the prophetic period. The period of the formation of Islamic law or the Prophet Muhammad's jurisprudence is divided into two phases, namely the Mecca phases which includes everything related to belief, morals-ethics, and fiqh (law); and the Medina phase which is more oriented to the formation of law, including social situations or the social construction phase. Islamic law or the Prophet Muhammad's jurisprudence is not a product of Muhammad's ideology like some scholars view that Islamic law does not have theological and juristic nuances but only historical-sociological aspects.

Abstract

Existing studies on Islamic leadership in Indonesia heavily focus on pesantren-based kiais, highlighting institutional authority as the primary source of religious legitimacy. This study addresses the limited attention received by non-institutional religious actors by examining the role of kiais without pesantren in constructing local wisdom values for peacebuilding in multicultural settings. Using a phenomenological approach, this research was conducted in three different locations: Wagir (Malang Regency), Polehan (Malang City), and Bali. Data were extracted from in-depth interviews and participant observation involving three key informants actively engaged in interreligious interaction. The findings reveal three main patterns. First, religious authority is constructed through social proximity and moral credibility rather than formal institutional affiliation. Second, these kiais employ dialogical and mediative strategies, particularly listening-based engagement and informal conflict resolution, in managing interreligious conflict. Third, they develop contextual interpretations of Islamic teachings by adapting religious practices to local cultural norms to sustain social harmony. This study theoretically extends the concept of religious authority beyond institutional frameworks toward a model of grassroots value construction rooted in lived social interactions. Empirically, it highlights the role of non-pesantren kiais as active agents of peacebuilding in multicultural contexts. Practically, the findings offer a contextual model of value-based religious leadership relevant for peace education and community-based conflict mitigation in pluralistic societies.
