Abstract

This study examines the implementation of ecotheological values in the patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) farming practices of the GMIM Kanaan Karowa congregation in the Tompasobaru I region. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were gathered through in-depth interviews, field observations, and church document analysis. The findings reveal a significant gap between the congregation’s strong theological awareness regarding the responsibility to care for creation and the reality of environmentally unfriendly agricultural practices. The community remains dependent on chemical fertilisers, pesticides, and wood-fuelled distillation methods that pose ecological risks. The church’s role is still confined to doctrinal teaching, lacking structured ecological action. Therefore, the church must take a leading role in integrating faith with ecological engagement to promote sustainable agriculture in harmony with Christian belief and the integrity of creation.

Abstract

This article explores the relevance of Søren Kierkegaard’s concept of private theology in addressing the ecological crisis within the congregation of GMIBM Sion Tonom. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach and theological reflection, the study finds that a personal, existential spirituality has the capacity to foster authentic and contextually grounded ecological engagement. Notions such as the leap of faith and the teleological suspension of the ethical demonstrate that personal faith can transcend prevailing social norms in pursuit of divine obedience. Amidst the structural limitations of the institutional Church, private theology emerges as a participatory and transformative spiritual foundation, enabling the development of grassroots ecotheological movements. A faith lived intimately becomes a source of moral courage for acting towards the integrity of creation.

Abstract

This study highlights the urgency of implementing Green Open Space (RTH) in church environments as a form of green ecclesiology. The environmental crisis due to climate change and exploitation of natural resources demands the active involvement of various sectors, including the church, in maintaining ecological balance. The church plays a strategic role in shaping the ecological awareness of the congregation and becoming an agent of change in environmental conservation. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with a literature review approach to explore the ecological, social, and spiritual benefits of RTH, as well as the challenges faced in its implementation. The results of the study show that the presence of RTH in churches contributes to improving air quality, reducing environmental temperatures, and providing space for spiritual reflection and social interaction of the congregation. However, in its implementation, the church faces obstacles such as limited land, lack of congregation awareness, and lack of regulatory and financial support.

Abstract

Various natural disasters recently have shown how important it is to build awareness of ecology within the framework of a life of faith. The importance of this awareness has also given rise to ecotheological studies within Christian religious universities. This research aims to analyze the ecological awareness of IAKN Manado students by applying qualitative research methods through a case study approach. The research results reveal that ecological awareness in the IAKN Manado environment is still limited to particular groups, namely some lecturers and staff, where this awareness is stimulated by appeals, warnings, and supervision from leaders regarding the campus environment. In contrast, among students, this awareness is still low. This is due to the understanding that ecological issues are social problems unrelated to Christian faith and spirituality.
