Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the types of modulation technique, to analyze the modulation technique works and the dominant type of modulation technique in the Critical Eleven novel by Ika Natassa. The method of this research was descriptive qualitative. Data were collected from sentences that consist of words, phrases, and clauses in the novel Critical Eleven as source of data. The findings of the study revealed that: (a) all the modulation techniques proposed by Vinay and Dalbernet (1995) were used in the Critical Eleven novel by Rain Chudori as the translator, which are: abstract for concrete, reversal of terms, negative contrary, part to whole, part another part, active for passive, space for time, intervals and limits, and change of symbol, (b) modulation techniques were used by changing the form or structure of a sentence without altering its meaning, and (c) there are two most dominant techniques in the novel, which are: abstract for concrete three data found and reversal of terms three data found.

Abstract

Kebutuhan terhadap penguasaan bahasa Inggris sebagai salah satu bahasa internasioanal sangat penting. Tujuan utama pelatihan ini adalah upaya pemberdayaan Sumber Daya Manusia (SDM) melalui program penguatan literasi bahasa Inggris. Pelaksanaan pelatihan literasi bahasa inggris ini sangat penting diberikan bagi masyarakat lokal khususnya para pemuda yang sudah mulai melek serta sadar akan pentingnya literasi bahasa Inggris. Kegiatan ini juga merupakan suatu refleksi terdukungnya visi dan misi pemerintah dalam mengembangkan SDM khususnya bagi masyarakat khususnya yang sudah tidak asing lagi dengan penggunaan dan keberadaan bahasa Inggris sebagai salah satu bahasa internasional. Pelatihan literasi bahasa Inggris mencakup palatihan pada kemampuan dasar untuk dapat memperoleh, memproses, dan memahami dasar informasi pada kegiatan membaca, berbicara dan menulis dalam bahasa Inggris. Pelaksanaan kegiatan pelatihan ini merupakan salah satu jawaban dari berbagai anggapan bahwa belajar bahasa Inggris itu mahal biayanya sehingga tidak sedikit masyarakat khususnya masyarakat pedalaman tidak dapat mempelajari bahasa Inggris secara maksimal. Faktanya pelatihan literasi bahasa Inggris masih sangat minim dilakukan disebabkan oleh biaya yang mahal yang menyebabkan kemampuan dan kesadaran akan pentingnya literasi bahasa Inggris masih rendah. Pada pelaksanaan pelatihan ini, para pelatih memfasilitasi berbagai media pendukung seperti proyektor, laptop, handbook, notebook, vocabulary card serta pelaksanaannya juga dilaksanakan pada tempat terbuka outdoor dan sekali-sekali indoor agar tercipta suasana pelatihan yang nyaman, menyenangkan serta efektif. Kegiatan ini dilakukan bagi kelompok Pemuda di Kampung Inggris Medan agar memiliki keahlian berbahasa Inggris dalam pembedaharaan kata, struktur bahasa, menyimak, berbicara, menulis, membaca. Selama ini kondisi para kelompok pemuda di Kampung Inggris Medan diharapkan dapat menciptakan masyarakat yang nantinya siap bersaing secara global dengan keahlian berbahasa Inggris yang telah diperoleh.

Abstract

The Lecture Exchange Program held as part of iPROPEX 2024 aims to provide insights into the potential and opportunities of entrepreneurship in the coffee industry, specifically Aceh coffee. Through this lecture, students at Politeknik Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin gain in-depth knowledge about the history, production process, and challenges faced by the coffee industry in Aceh, as well as effective marketing and branding strategies for promoting Aceh coffee in international markets. The program also encourages students to actively engage in designing innovative ideas for coffee product development. The outcomes of this program are expected to inspire students to cultivate entrepreneurial spirit and create sustainable business opportunities in the coffee sector, ultimately contributing to both local and global economic growth.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of postcolonial literary studies on undergraduate students' historical awareness and their perspectives toward cultural diversity in higher education. The research employed a quantitative approach supported by qualitative evidence to obtain a comprehensive understanding of both the instructional process and its educational outcomes. Twenty undergraduate students from the English Literature Study Program participated in the study. Data were collected through Likert-scale questionnaires, classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and students' reflective journals. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, instrument validity and reliability testing, and analyses of relationships among the research variables based on the proposed conceptual framework. The descriptive findings indicated that, prior to the instructional intervention, students demonstrated a moderate level of historical awareness with a mean score of 59.65, while their perspectives toward cultural diversity were categorized as moderately positive, with a mean score of 64.40. Throughout the learning process, students showed improved ability to connect literary texts with colonial history, understand the construction of cultural identities, and develop more inclusive attitudes toward cultural diversity. Classroom discussions centered on postcolonial literary texts encouraged critical reflection on power relations, cultural representation, and the continuing influence of colonial legacies in contemporary society. The findings suggest that postcolonial literary studies have considerable potential as an effective pedagogical approach for strengthening historical literacy, promoting intercultural understanding, and fostering inclusive perspectives among university students. This study contributes to the development of literary pedagogy, literature-based history education, and multicultural education within higher education institutions.
