Abstract

The 2024 Makassar Mayoral Election is part of Indonesia's nationwide simultaneous local elections (Pilkada), which garners significant attention due to the city’s unique and dynamic political context. This study aims to analyze the political preferences of Makassar residents during the 2024 election using a qualitative case study approach. The research data were obtained from official government institutions, such as the General Elections Commission and the Makassar City Government, along with various online media platforms. The findings reveal that voter preferences are shaped by multiple interrelated factors, political party coalitions, the public image of candidates, key campaign issues, and the persistence of transactional politics. A particularly notable finding is the relatively low voter turnout, recorded at only 57.7%, which is below both the national target and the participation rate of previous elections. This study confirms that political preferences in Makassar are driven by the interplay of candidate personality traits and the local socio-political environment. It highlights the continuing influence of patron-client relationships and money politics, alongside emerging patterns of issue-based and image-based voting. These insights underscore the importance of strengthening political education and enhancing electoral integrity to improve democratic quality at the local level in future elections

Abstract

The political dynasty network pattern is a series of political strategies aimed at obtaining power by passing on positions to individuals who have family ties to previous power holders. Based on this, this study aims to determine the pattern of dynastic political network formation and its impact on community political behavior in Maggenrang Village, Kahu Subdistrict, Bone Regency. This research uses a qualitative method to describe and explain the patterns of the formation of political dynasty networks and their impact on political behavior. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation. The results showed that the dynastic political network pattern in Maggenrang Village includes several aspects. First, stable economic capital and family relations with the previous village head make the current village head part of dynastic politics. Second, cultural capital, which includes the character and competence of the village head, is very important because it has an impact on the decision-making process and actions. Third, good social capital can be seen in the active role of the village head in community activities. Finally, symbolic capital is less strong but still able to prosper its people. The impact of political dynasties in Maggenrang Village is the limitation of opportunities for other individuals who are more worthy to hold the position of village head.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the strategies employed by Abdul Rahman in securing victory as a member of the South Sulawesi Provincial Legislative Council (DPRD) in Electoral District 4. The primary focus of this research is the role of political consultants as independent actors who formulate effective campaign strategies without being involved in other local political dynamics. Using a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, data was collected through interviews and documentation related to the campaign's implementation. The findings reveal that Abdul Rahman's success was supported by strategies emphasizing community-based approaches and strengthening political networks across three regencies: Bantaeng, Jeneponto, and the Selayar Islands. Political consultants played a crucial role in managing relevant local issues and effectively mobilizing mass support, without explicitly targeting specific competitors. By adopting a tailored approach that resonated with the unique socio-political dynamics of each region, Abdul Rahman successfully secured significant votes across all three areas. This study highlights the importance of political consultants in modern electoral campaigns, particularly in crafting strategies that align with local contexts and voter behavior. It also underscores the effectiveness of community-focused campaigns in building trust and garnering support, offering valuable insights for future political campaigns in similar contexts.

Abstract

The childfree phenomenon, defined as a conscious decision not to have children, has sparked public debate, especially after influencer Gita Savitri Devi (Gitasav) openly expressed her views on social media. Generation Z, who grew up in the digital era, represents an interesting group to study because they have extensive access to information and are accustomed to shaping opinions through social media platforms. This research aims to analyze Gen Z’s reception of the childfree discourse in Gitasav’s content using Stuart Hall’s reception theory, which categorizes audience responses into three positions: dominant hegemonic position, negotiated position, and oppositional position. The study employs a qualitative approach with the reception study method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with five Gen Z informants who are students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar. The results show that Gen Z’s reception is divided into three main positions: (1) full acceptance of the childfree perspective as a form of individual freedom (dominant position), (2) selective acceptance by aligning it with cultural and religious values (negotiated position), and (3) complete rejection based on religious norms and social traditions (oppositional position). Factors such as religious background, cultural values, personal experiences, and the intensity of social media exposure influence the formation of these receptions.
