Abstract

This research is to describe the message completion quality of the English – Bahasa Indonesia subtitle translation videos from six different channels and to describe the factors which motivate the message completion quality of the subtitle translation. The type of this research is included as qualitative research type adapted from linguistic research method, here is translational (identity) method (Sudaryanto, 2001). The content analysis method is employed specifically the semantic content analysis method and grammatical content analysis method. The research results show that there are four different channel videos that reach Very Excellent Quality i.e., CNN, KOMPAS, MoFA, and Tribun. Orderly, Tribun achieves the highest quality in both translation and completeness followed by MoFA, CNN, and then KOMPAS. In terms of completeness quality, Tribun is scored as the most complete both in technical limitation and in undelivered messages followed by MoFA, KOMPAS, and CNN, and their scores are very excellent. Although there is no mistake in the meaning accuracy, meaning clarity, and expression naturalness in terms of translation quality, both iNews RCTI, and TvOne, are good enough in terms of completeness. They both have no technical limitation problems but they have many undelivered messages.

Abstract

This study explores the politeness strategies used in netizens’ comments on the policy of disbursing regional ASN teacher allowances across three social media platforms: Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram. The research is grounded in the growing phenomenon of public opinion expression in digital spaces, which often reflects varying levels of language politeness. The purpose of this study is to identify the types of politeness strategies used, examine the differences between platforms, and uncover the influencing factors. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the study applies Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory. Data were collected from user comments on a speech by President Prabowo Subianto regarding ASN teacher allowance distribution. The findings indicate that negative politeness and impoliteness strategies dominate across all platforms, with varying patterns. Facebook and TikTok featured more direct and sarcastic comments, while Instagram tended to display more indirect and polite expressions. Influencing factors include platform characteristics, the content of the speech, and the personal experiences of users. These findings contribute to digital pragmatics studies and offer practical insights for promoting ethical communication on social media.

Abstract

This study investigates the different types and communicative purposes of directive speech acts articulated by the characters in the animated film The Addams Family (2019). As defined by John Searle (1979), directive speech acts are utterances used by speakers to influence listeners' actions, which include commands, requests, suggestions, and prohibitions the directive speech act classification proposed by Safitri et al. (2021). Using a qualitative descriptive methodology, this study systematically collected and categorized relevant dialogue excerpts from the film. The analysis shows that commands directives are the most frequently used forms, reflecting the unique traits of the characters and the contextual demands of the storyline. In addition to these dominant forms, other directive acts-such as prohibitions, requests, and suggestions also contribute meaningfully to the characters' interactions. The findings of this study enrich the scholarship of pragmatics by illustrating how directive language operates in fictional cinematic settings, thus providing valuable insights into the strategic use of language in media discourse.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the types and meanings of conversational implicatures in the film Frozen 1 using a pragmatic approach. Conversational implicatures refer to implied meanings that are interpreted based on the context of utterances. This study refers to Grice's theory of cooperation principles and conversational maxims. The method used is qualitative descriptive with content analysis techniques. The data, consisting of dialogues between characters, were categorized into conventional and non-conventional implicatures. The results show that implicatures in this film appear through violations of maxims such as quantity, quality, relevance, and manner. The use of implicatures aims to convey hidden messages such as sarcasm, subtle rejection, criticism, and polite expressions. These findings prove that animated films are not only a means of entertainment but also contain valuable linguistic elements. The analysis of implicatures, which includes forms of sarcasm, subtle rejection, criticism, and polite expressions, shows that animated films have a broader role than mere entertainment; they contain important pragmatic values. therefore, this study contributes to the development of pragmatic studies while offering the potential for utilizing animated films as a language learning medium to sharpen the ability to understand implied meanings, with a recommendation that future research examine the application of implicature in various film genres or other media to enrich understanding of linguistic diversity.

Abstract

In the era of globalization and the development of communication technology, commercial advertising has become one of the main means of shapping public perception of brands and products, especially in the highly competitive and dynamic fashion industry of the United States. Advertising in this industry serves not only as a promotional tool, but also as a complex communication medium that relies on language to influence, persuade, and bulid brand identity. Therefore, understanding the meaning behind advertising messages is important to explore the communication strategies used. Pragmasemantics analysis, which combines the study of meaning (semantics) with the use of language in a social (pragmatic) context, offers a critical approach to understanding how advertising messages are design to produce a particular effect on audiences. This approach allows analysis not only of the literal meaning of the advertising text, but also of the implicit meanings, assumptions, implications, and persuasive strategies used to influence consumers. The fashion industry in America is known not only for its products, but also for its advertising-built naratives-naratives that are often loaded with symbolism, lifestyle, and cultural values. Thus, analyzing advertising from a pragmatic perspective becomes essential to understand how meaning is constructed and how consumers are targeted linguistically and psychologically. This study also contributes to broader discussion in linguistics and media studies by demonstrating how language in advertising reflects and reinforce social ideologies, aspirations, and consumers identity in a globalized marketplace. Through a pragmasemantics lens, this research reveals the power of linguistics choises in shaping emotional engagement, creating desire, and aligning consumer behaviour with brand ideologies.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of deixis in a BBC News article titled “Trump blames Zelensky for starting war after massive Russian attack” to explore how language constructs narratives in political conflict reporting. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach grounded in pragmatic analysis, the research identifies and categorizes five types of deixis: person, place, time, discourse, and social deixis. The analysis reveals that person deixis is the most frequently used, emphasizing the roles and responsibilities of political actors, followed by place and time deixis that structure the spatial and chronological context of the news. Discourse and social deixis, though less frequent, contribute to textual cohesion and the representation of institutional roles. The study concludes that deixis functions not only as a linguistic reference but also as a strategic tool for framing meaning, positioning political figures, and shaping public perception. These findings imply that journalists and readers alike should be aware of the pragmatic power of deixis in news discourse, encouraging critical media literacy and reflective reporting, especially in the context of international political conflicts.
