Abstract

Hypertension can be caused by an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in the body. Consumption of sweetened herbal tea can affect antioxidant levels. This study aims to test the antioxidant activity of telang flower herbal tea as an alternative treatment for hypertension and hedonic testing of the formulated herbal tea. Telang flower herbal tea was formulated without sweetener, sugar sweetener, stevia leaf sweetener, sorbitol and cyclamate sweetener. Telang flower herbal tea was brewed with 70℃ water then phytochemical screening of flavonoids, saponins and tannins using standard methods and antioxidant activity using DPPH method. Hedonic test was conducted by assessing the liking of 20 panellists for herbal tea on a scale of 1-5. Unsweetened telang flower herbal tea, sugar sweetener, stevia leaf sweetener, sorbitol and cyclamate sweetener had values of 247.97 ppm; 178.38 ppm; 497.765 ppm; 164.87ppm; 224.96 ppm with hedonic test values of 3.25; 4.05; 3.55; 3.55; 3.35 respectively. The antioxidant activity of telang flower herbal tea with different sweeteners is in the weak to moderate category and panellists like herbal tea with sugar sweetener the most.

Abstract

Antioxidants are compounds that have the ability to againts the harmful effects of free radicals. Antioxidant activity was influenced by active compounds, growing environment, cultivation systems, techniques and handling of raw materials. Hydroponics is a plant cultivation system that does not use soil as media. Differences in hydroponic and conventional systems in soil use can affect antioxidant activity. This study aims to conduct a qualitative test of antioxidants through phytochemical screening and analysis of thin layer chromatography (TLC) and to test the antioxidant activity of hydroponic and conventional red spinach leaf extract. Red spinach leaves were extracted by maceration method for 3 days with stirring every 1x24 hours. The red spinach leaf extract was then organoleptically tested for color, shape, and odor. Phytochemical screening was carried out to determine the content of flavonoids and saponins using color and foam reactions. The screening results were confirmed by thin layer chromatography (TLC) analysis with hexane:ethyl acetate as the mobile phase in a ratio of 5:5. Antioxidant activity test with DPPH Method. The results of the calculation of the yield on hydroponic red spinach leaf extract was 11.5% and conventional was 15.1%. The results of phytochemical screening and TLC analysis showed that both hydroponic and conventional red spinach leaf extracts were positive for flavonoid and saponin compounds. The IC50 value of hydroponic red spinach leaf extract was 142.31 while conventional was 73.73 ppm. The antioxidant activity of hydroponic red spinach leaf extract was in the medium category and conventional in the strong category.

Abstract

Recreational sports participants have a high risk of experiencing skin problems due to ultraviolet radiation. This can be prevented by using cosmetics that act as photoprotection, such as clay masks with additional natural ingredients containing antioxidants, as skin care because the antioxidant content is able to prevent damage from free radicals and oxidative stress. This study aims to evaluate the physical stability of clay masks containing Wedi snake fruit seed powder and its potential as a skin care product for recreational sports participants. This study is an experimental study by creating 4 clay mask formulations with different concentrations of Wedi snake fruit seed powder. Clay mask stability was evaluated by different storage conditions (room temperature and refrigerator) and 6-cycle cycling tests with organoleptic measurements, pH, and irritation tests. The physical stability of clay masks containing Wedi snake fruit seed powder at room temperature storage was unstable because mould appeared on the 28th day, while it was stable when stored in the refrigerator and after refrigeration and after cycling tests. The presence of antioxidant activity in Wedi snake fruit makes clay masks containing Wedi snake fruit seed powder have the potential as a skin care product for recreational sports participants.

Abstract

Wedi snakefruit is one of the local species snakefruit produced in Bojonegoro Regency. Antioxidant activity in salak fruit may be influenced by its cultivar. The peel of snakefruit is reported to have antioxidant activity as in salak fruit flesh. Antioxidants can prevent free radical damage to human skin and prevent aging so can be developed in cosmetic preparations. The current trend of antiaging cosmetic preparations leads to preparations with nanoparticle size. The objectives of this study is to determine the antioxidant activity and to characterisation of nanoparticles Wedi snakefruit peel extract that will be developed as anti-aging cosmetics. Wedi snakefruit peel extract was conducted using maceration method with 96% ethanol solvent, antioxidant activity test was conducted by DPPH method and total phenol content determination method using Folin-Ciocalteu method. Nanoparticles preparation of extract by ionic gelation method with characterisation through particle measurement using PSA and zeta potential measurement. Potential antiaging activity was measured through tyrosinase inhibition testing. The results showed the IC50 value measured by DPPH method of 56.10 ppm, total phenolic content of 13.41 mg GAE/g. PSA test results showed particle size of Wedi snakefruit peel extract 884 nm and zeta sizer value of 2 mv. Tyrosine inhibitory activity of Wedi snakefruit peel extract was 63.8%. The antioxidant activity of Wedi snakefruit peel extract is in the strong category, has not met the nanoparticle requirements and has tyrosinase inhibitory activity so that it has the potential to be developed as an antiaging cosmetic.
