Abstract

Social inequality in the field of education impacts the implementation of educational goals, causing them to be less than optimal. Education should be accessible to all members of society. The changes occurring in the educational sector require all actors to adapt and follow these changes. This study aims to identify and analyze the strategies employed by teachers and students in addressing social inequality in education during the Covid-19 pandemic. The research utilizes a qualitative research method with a phenomenological approach. A phenomenological approach was chosen in this research to reveal and understand the phenomenon of gaps in education by teachers and students as well as the strategies used by teachers and students in dealing with these gaps. Data collection techniques include in-depth interviews, documentation, and the use of previous studies as references for this research. The collected data were analyzed using Pierre Bourdieu's theory of capital. The results of this study indicate that social inequality in education during the Covid-19 pandemic was driven by the unpreparedness of teachers and students to implement distance learning. However, teachers and students were able to overcome social inequality in education by utilizing the capital they possess, namely social capital, cultural capital, economic capital, and symbolic capital.

Abstract

A massive demonstration in Jakarta called “Aksi Bela Islam” (Action to Defend Islam) marks a continuity of the Islamist currents in post-New Order Indonesia. Many observers called it “Islamic populism”, a populist, cross-class alliance on behalf of the Islamic masses or “ummah” against capitalist development that has marginalized Muslims in the struggle for access to economic and political resources. However, despite this refreshing approach, many studies on Islamic populism still concentrate on the state (instead of capital) and the urban areas in explaining the development of Islamic populism. This article, therefore, offers a different approach to analyzing Islamic populism through the understanding of capitalism as a social relation and shifts to the countryside as its empirical basis by focusing on the case study of Bulak village in West Java. By combining insights from the literature on agrarian change and populism as a political strategy and adopting qualitative methods namely in-depth interviews (including oral history) and field observation, this article found that contemporary Islamic populism in Indonesia is a result of the specific development of capitalist relations in the context of rural agrarian change. In addition, it also found that Islamic populism is not a phenomenon confined to the urban areas, since it also spreads to the countryside. Moreover, Islamic populism in the countryside has distinctiveness, related to context, social background, and the ways it is mobilized.

Abstract

The evolving demands of the times necessitate that educators develop innovative and engaging learning experiences for their students. Additionally, teachers as facilitators, must also be able to understand the needs of their students. When students experience a decline in motivation during lessons, it is necessary for teachers to take action. This situation occurred in class X-2 at SMA Negeri 8 Surakarta. The categorization results showed that 66% of the students had low motivation in learning. Therefore, it is essential for the teacher to take action to address the low learning motivation among the students. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of implementing game-based learning to increase students' motivation. The research was conducted through classroom action research over two cycles. Both cycles applied game-based learning to the material on various social phenomena and social research. The number of students participating in the study was 36. Data collection was carried out through observation and reflection after the lessons were conducted. The results showed an increase in students' learning motivation after the intervention. Thus, it can be concluded that the implementation of game-based learning can be an innovative and engaging alternative for students.

Abstract

This study investigates the problems arising from the use of sidewalks by street vendors in Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of the presence of street vendors on pedestrian facilities, their socio-economic conditions, as well as the point of view of the sociology of law on this issue. The method applied in this study is qualitative with the sociology of law approach. Data collection is done through literature research. Findings from the study suggest that the presence of street vendors has a major impact on pedestrian infrastructure, often resulting in disruption and discomfort for people walking. In the socio-economic aspect, street vendors play a vital role in providing employment and income opportunities for low-income citizens, they also face various problems such as relocation and lack of access to capital. The point of view of the sociology of law highlights that there is a tension between existing legal norms and social practices related to the use of public spaces. The study concludes that it is critical to develop more comprehensive and sustainable policies, which not only regulate street vendors but also support them economically and socially and involve them in the decision-making process.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the learning motivation of children at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Tarbhiyatus Sibyan in Jelun Village, Banyuwangi Regency, by examining how family background and social environment shape their perspectives on education and the future. The study employs a qualitative method with a case study approach, utilizing participatory observation and direct conversations during teaching activities. The findings indicate that children's learning motivation is influenced by family habitus, emotional stability, and the social capital available in their daily lives. Children from families with strong educational support tend to have a clear future orientation, while children from non-harmonious or less stable families often show apathetic attitudes toward school and choose to work after graduating from the MI. In addition, the study found the existence of a pseudo-identity construction in some students as a form of psychological compensation due to the lack of parental involvement. This analysis is reinforced by Pierre Bourdieu's habitus theory and Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory, which show that learning motivation is not only born from individual willingness but also from the relationship between the family environment, school, and village social structures. This study concludes that differences in children's learning motivation at MI Tarbhiyatus Sibyan are closely related to each child's social conditions and life experiences. The results of this study are expected to serve as a reference for schools and communities to strengthen social and educational support for children in rural areas.
