Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of degradation on mangrove forest ecosystems and analyze innovative strategies used to maintain the sustainability of these ecosystems. The method used is the literature review method, in which various sources of relevant scientific literature are systematically evaluated. The results of this study show that mangrove forest degradation has serious consequences for coastal ecosystems, including biodiversity loss, increased risk of natural disasters, and decreased water quality. However, various strategies have been developed to address these challenges, including ecosystem restoration, sustainable management, local community participation, and the application of modern technology. A thorough discussion of the findings reveals that the integration of these strategies can provide effective solutions in preserving mangrove forests and strengthening the resilience of coastal ecosystems. The practical implication of this study is the importance of adopting innovative strategies in environmental management, while future research directions include increasing collaboration among stakeholders and developing more advanced technologies to support sustainable mangrove forest conservation.

Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of natural materials as antimicrobial agents in the treatment of freshwater fish diseases, with the aim of offering a safer and more sustainable alternative to synthetic chemicals and antibiotics. Using the literature review method, this study analyzed relevant current scientific articles. Results showed that extracts of betel leaf, neem leaf, cinnamon essential oil, basil essential oil, aloe vera, and propolis had significant antimicrobial activity against freshwater fish pathogens such as Flavobacterium columnare and Aeromonas hydrophila. Betel leaf extract and cinnamon essential oil showed inhibition rates of up to 85% and 82%, respectively. The advantages of using natural ingredients include environmental safety, reduced risk of antimicrobial resistance, and immunostimulating effects in fish. However, challenges such as ingredient availability, cost, and standardization still need to be addressed. This study suggests the development of natural ingredient-based products, standardization and quality testing, further research, and training for fish farmers. Collaboration between stakeholders is also important to reduce dependence on antibiotics. In conclusion, natural ingredients have great potential as effective and environmentally friendly antimicrobial agents in freshwater fish health management.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of three feeding methods-manual, automatic, and sensor-based-on the growth and feed efficiency of White Snapper (Lates calcarifer). The research was conducted from April to July 2024 in fish farming ponds in North Nias. The research method used was a field experiment with a complete randomized design (CRD) which was analyzed using ANOVA test to compare the significant effects of each feeding method. The results showed that the sensor-based feeding method produced the highest average fish weight growth (3.85 g/day) with the best feed conversion efficiency (FCR) (1.25), significantly superior to the manual and automatic methods (p < 0.05). The sensor-based method proved to be more efficient in meeting fish feed requirements precisely, improving feed efficiency and reducing operational costs. Based on these results, the use of sensor-based technology in the feeding system is recommended as an innovative solution to improve the productivity and sustainability of White Snapper aquaculture.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess the impact of octopus fishing gear use on coral reef ecosystems in Simeulue District. The research was conducted in May 2024, with research methods combining in-depth interviews and field observations. The results show that the use of unsustainable fishing gear, such as nets, contributes to the destruction of coral reefs, which negatively impacts marine biodiversity. Although fishers recognize the importance of ecosystem sustainability, challenges in adopting environmentally friendly practices still exist, including a lack of law enforcement and education. The conclusion of this study emphasizes the need for collaboration between the government and fishing communities in formulating more effective fisheries resource management policies, as well as the importance of training in sustainable fishing techniques. The study provides recommendations for the implementation of stricter regulations on the use of fishing gear, as well as encouraging active participation of fishers in fisheries resource management.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of water quality on the productivity of bamboo lobsters (Panulirus versicolor) cultivated in a floating net cage sistem (KJA) in the waters of Sinabang Bay, Simeulue Regency. Water quality is one of the main environmental factors that determines the success of marine cultivation, especially for high-value species such as bamboo lobsters. Water quality parameters observed in this study included temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and ammonia levels. Measurements were carried out periodically during the 90-day cultivation period to capture environmental dynamics that affect the biological performance of lobsters. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) experimental design with three treatments based on different cultivation locations that have variations in natural water quality, each with three replications. The results showed that optimal water quality significantly affected the increase in bamboo lobster productivity, as indicated by the parameters of the specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion efficiency (FCR), and survival rate (SR). The location with the best water quality (P1), which had high DO and low ammonia levels, recorded a daily SGR of 1.82%, a FCR of 1.6, and a SR of 90%. Conversely, the location with low water quality (P3) showed significantly decreased biological performance, with suboptimal SGR, FCR, and SR, primarily due to low dissolved oxygen and high levels of toxic ammonia. These findings emphasize the importance of continuous monitoring and management of water quality in marine cage sistems to support optimal lobster growth and survival. Therefore, managing aquatic environmental quality is key to increasing mariculture productivity and ensuring the sustainability of fishery resources in coastal areas.
