Abstract

This study explores speech acts as pragmatic studies in the film "Yowes Ben 2". The researcher will investigate the many forms of speech acts and classify them focusing on the illocutionary categories employed in the film. This study follows John Rogers Searle's (1975) illocutionary action theory, which is assertive (the speaker's confidence in something), directive (something the listener should do), commissive (commitment to do something), expressive (expression of an attitude or feeling), and declarative (making changes such as pointing, stating, etc.)The research design implemented in this study is qualitative. Researchers gathered information by screening the film "Yowes Ben 2" and analyzing the different forms of speaking acts. Researchers employed content analysis to analyze their data. The steps in data analysis are as follows: the researcher will identify, analyze, interpret, and draw conclusions. In accordance to the data, expressive speech acts account for the greatest number of illocutionary acts (56%). Directive speech accounted for 38%, commissive speech 3%, representational speech 0%, and declarative speech 3%.

Abstract

In the context of Indonesian political communication, affecting public opinion and attracting supports can be achieved by employing religious rhetoric. Religious references are commonly used by politicians to attract various audiences. However, the specific linguistic strategies used to achieve this effect remain underexplored, particularly the use of deictic expressions which focus on words and phrases that rely on contextual information for interpretation. This study addresses this gap by studying how Prabowo Subianto, the president of Indonesia and a significant Indonesian political figure, uses deixis in his religious-themed speeches to foster solidarity, assert leadership, and construct ideological narratives. The investigation employs pragmatic theory, particularly Levinson (1983) typology of deixis, which includes person, spatial (place), temporal (time), social, and discourse deixis. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method to analyze five of Prabowo’s speeches in order to identify the deictic expressions and their communicative functions. The findings of this study reveal a consistent use of inclusive person deixis (e.g., “kita”), spatial deixis that connects the audience in shared spaces, and temporal deixis that expresses urgency and collective momentum. Social deixis reflects politeness norms and cultural hierarchy in Indonesia, while discourse deixis ensures cohesion and rhetorical clarity. According to these findings, deixis in political speech can be considered instrumental, not merely referential, in maintaining relationships, expressing shared identity, and reinforcing ideological commitments. The implications suggest that deictic analysis offers an influential perspective for understanding the interaction of language, religion, and politics in Indonesian public discourse.

Abstract

The study aims to measure how well the textbook supports students in attaining pragmatic proficiency in context-dependent professional communication. Applying a descriptive qualitative research, the study analyzes samples of text in the textbook according to the five deixis categories: person, place, time, discourse, and social deixis. The findings reveal that textbooks include diverse deictic expressions, but their pragmatic nature and context are not necessarily emphasized. Person deixis features prominently, as they are frequently used in business communication. However, other categories are still underrepresented, possibly limiting students from engaging with complex, hierarchical, and implicit relationships. These findings highlight the need for more pragmatically enriched material within ESP materials in order to better equip studentss for professional communication tasks.

Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of project-based learning (PBL) that was integrated with video conferencing platforms such as OmeTV to assess its impact on willingness to communicate (WTC) in English. Fifty students from vocational college were selected as an experimental group who received PBL approach, and another fifty students participated as a control group, who only attended video conferencing session. The study employed mixed methods, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative data, to investigate students’ improvement on WTC before and after the implementation of PBL activities.  A questionnaire was developed by adopting WTC model from McIntyre (1998) to assess the effectiveness of PBL on the students’ WTC; meanwhile, in-depth interviews took place to explore the experiences and perspectives of how a supportive English environment can influence their WTC, challenge them to use English more actively and interactively, and overcome the difficulty of misunderstanding across cultures. The findings revealed a significant improvement in WTC for the experimental group, indicated by a t-value of 16.780 (p 0.001) and an R² increase from 45.3% to 85.4%. Conversely, the control group showed moderate improvement (t-value of 12.333, p 0.001) and an R² increase from 12.8% to 76%. This implied that video conferencing alone had a positive effect on the students’ WTC, but it was less impactful compared to the experimental groups who received PBL approach. Meanwhile, the interview results highlighted three key themes, namely, 1) feeling motivated to continue communicating in English and building confidence as an indicator of improved WTC, 2) challenges with foreigners helped them identify and overcome their language barrier and fear of making mistakes, and 3) usefulness of video conferencing session that provided authentic communication. Video conferencing platforms, such as OmeTV, enhance students' communication skills and build their confidence. Overall, the study contributes to the development of pedagogical approaches, as PBL offered student-centered learning to enhance their English language proficiency and communicative competence in the context of vocational students.
