Abstract

It is often assumed that native-English teachers are the best teachers in the teaching of English. This results in the preference towards native-English teachers and the isolation of non-native English teachers when it comes to English teaching profession. This assumption should not be perpetuated. English teaching researches have shown that native-English teachers are not always the ideal teachers in the teaching of English. The findings of the researches state that non-native English teachers have more advantages compared to the native ones especially in the context of English as an international language where English can no longer be associated with only English-speaking countries. This paper discusses the issue of the preference towards native-English teachers and the isolation of non-native English teachers.

Abstract

With the growing use of internet, a large number of English learning websites have been developed to assist English learners to improve their English. However, the websites do not always match the learners’ need, learners’ interests, and learners’ characteristic. Hence, it is essential for English teachers to evaluate the English learning websites before they recommend them to their students. The present study evaluated three language learning websites focusing on listening. Three major criteria including design, content, and learner fit were used as the parameters in the present evaluation. It is expected that, upon the evaluation, English language learners can be assisted to choose the best website for their English learning. In addition, this evaluation can contribute to the development of the language learning websites in which the feedback from the evaluation can be incorporated to the better development of the websites.

Abstract

In general, a robot is defined as a mechanical device used by humans to ease human work. Robots are usually used for difficult and dangerous tasks. One example of its use is a firefighting robot that replaces human tasks in extinguishing fires. The firefighting robot is on duty to find fire spots in a city then extinguishing them. To be able to put out a fire, the robot must implement an efficient program in finding and determining the shortest path to the location of the fire and then put it out. For this reason, the robot is equipped with proximity and fire sensors to detect the presence of fire. The design is made with a three-step program that is designing needs of robot control, robot control mechanism scheme preparation and implementing an algorithm for making program syntax. The Brute-Force Algorithm can be implemented to indicate the presence of a hotspot signal and the backtracking Algorithm is implemented to find the shortest path to the hotspot location. This paper discusses the use of a brute-force algorithm and a backtracking algorithm in a firefighting robot program to make the fire search process more efficient. The results show that from 8 input fire points, the firefighting robot is able to find all the points within 3.12 seconds with 13 times trial. In its application, the writer used Visual Basic 6.0 in the firefighting robot program. Keywords: Firefighting Robot, Brute-Force Algorithm, and Backtracking Algorithm.

Abstract

Socialization of village website management in Pardinggaran Village is an activity that helps the government increase awareness among village officials that village websites are a medium for promoting village tourism potential and superior village products. This activity is based on the results of observations on the village website owned by Pardinggaran Village which is still not optimal in managing information related to the village. There is still very little information regarding Pardinggaran Village from the website. Lack of exposure to village activities can be one of the reasons for the lack of tourism development in the village. This is because Pardinggaran Village is a village located in Toba Regency which is a tourist destination area. So, based on these problems, this activity aims to provide innovative solutions in the form of socialization in managing village websites. Through this activity, it is hoped that it can help Pardinggaran Village in managing the village website optimally so that the village website can be used as a medium for information and promotion.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of integrating Project-Based Learning (PBL) with AI-supported tools, specifically the Orai application, to enhance students’ English-speaking proficiency. Conducted as a Classroom Action Research (CAR), the study involved two cycles, each including pre-tests and post-tests, assessed using the Speaking Rubric proposed by O'Malley and Pierce (1990). The participants were 25 first-semester students from the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions) study program enrolled in the English 1 course at the Business Administration Department of Politeknik Negeri Medan during the 2025/2026 academic year. This study used a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data to provide a comprehensive analysis of the intervention. The quantitative data revealed significant improvements in students' speaking proficiency. The pre-test mean score was 75.28, and by the post-test, the average score had increased to 86.00, reflecting a 10.72-point improvement. Additionally, Cycle 1 indicates an average increase of 5.96 points (from 75.28 to 81.24), while Cycle 2 shows a further 2.6-point improvement (from 81.24 to 83.84). This demonstrates a consistent upward trend in students' speaking skills throughout the intervention. Meanwhile, qualitative data further supports these findings, highlighting increased confidence, engagement, and active participation among students, particularly in real-world tasks related to tourism and hospitality. However, the intervention also revealed areas for further refinement. There is a need for more personalized support from instructors to address individual learning challenges, and a wider range of topics to cater to students' diverse interests and career aspirations. The integration of AI tools supported students in practicing individually and fostered greater confidence and more active engagement in collaborative projects. The results suggest that applying PBL with AI-assisted applications is an effective instructional strategy to address speaking challenges in English language learning at the tertiary level.

Abstract

Learners’ ability in carrying out communicative activities is highly demanded in the spoken English classroom. This paper discusses some aspects that should be taken into account when conducting a spoken English class in relation to raising pragmatic awareness through the inclusion of pragmatic instruction in the classroom. Some theoretical reviews for the inclusion of pragmatic instruction are also discussed. Through the inclusion of instruction in pragmatics in the spoken English classroom, learners are expected to develop their pragmatic competence and, therefore, are able to communicate naturally despite the fact that the full range of interactions with native speakers is limited.
