Abstract

In the rapidly evolving digital era, online advertising has emerged as a central strategy in marketing communication. While language plays a crucial role in crafting persuasive advertisements, few studies have provided a thematic synthesis of the linguistic strategies used in online ads. This study aims to identify and synthesize persuasive linguistic strategies as discussed in recent academic literature. The research employs thematic analysis based on Braun and Clarke’s six-phase framework. Data were collected from ten peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2020 and 2025, each focusing on persuasive language in digital advertising. The analysis revealed four dominant themes: Emotional Resonance, Building Credibility, Interactive Appeal, and Aesthetic Persuasion. These findings demonstrate that language in online advertising is not only used to convey product information but also to establish emotional connections, build trust, stimulate audience engagement, and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the message. The study offers practical implications for advertisers, encouraging a focus on emotional and interactive elements in message construction. It also calls for further research into the effectiveness of these strategies across different digital platforms and cultural contexts.

This research employed content analysis on a number of articles that had been published in linguistics journals across Indonesia since 2020 to 2024, with linguistic aspect in social media as the main focus of the research. This current research has revealed that in the past five years, the number of publications used social media as their data source had improved. Among those publications, the most dominant research designed was qualitative descriptive. In addition, content analysis is the most dominant method to analyze the data. Instagram is the most frequently platform used as data resources in linguistic research. Researchers are particularly interested to investigate pragmatic aspects towards the online communication in social media. Based on the findings, future research is encouraged to use more diverse research designs, expand the scope of linguistic domains, and explore new platforms such as threads to better capture evolving digital language trends. Researchers are also advised to continuously adapt their methods and analyses to the dynamic nature of online communication in Indonesia.

Abstract

Maintaining focus in writing is among the underemphasized but critical areas of academic literacy, particularly among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students. Indonesian EFL learners mostly put more effort into maintaining thematic coherence and logical coherence of writing despite their operationally effective grammatical and lexical control. Although writing pedagogy is a stronghold of language instruction, little has been investigated in Indonesia which seeks to investigate students' capacity to maintain focus, a fundamental skill in guaranteeing coherent and effective texts. This research was prompted by the noted lack of pedagogical focus and empirical investigation of focus in writing, and particularly at the tertiary level. Using a qualitative case study design, the researcher examined the writing of 25 second-semester business management students. Participants were tasked with composing personal narratives and reflecting on their writing experiences. After that, the students' writings were evaluated based on five criteria, such as clarity of main idea, relevance of supporting details, consistency, topic unity, transitions and coherence. Findings reveal that the majority of students demonstrated Limited to Basic proficiency in all five areas with the highest deficiencies observed in topic unity and consistency. Also, most of the students can write sentences but struggle to organize and connect the ideas logically correspond to the theme. The data also shows that the participants faced significant linguistic and cognitive challenges, such in expressing ideas fluently, selecting appropriate vocabulary, and understanding genre-based writing. This study underscores the urgent need for a pedagogical shift that adopt a process-based which constructivist approaches that view writing as a repeated activity involving planning, drafting, reviewing, and revising. Such an approach recognizes that effective writing instruction must extend beyond grammatical correctness and surface-level features.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of gamification-based applications in improving students' English language skills, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The Cake application, used for speaking and listening skills, and the Wordwall application, used for reading and writing skills, were implemented to enhance student proficiency. Pre-test and post-test analyses revealed significant improvements across all skills. The average speaking skill score increased by 15.5 points, indicating a notable enhancement in students' confidence and fluency. In listening skill, students' post-test score averaged 85.75, a significant increase from 61.5 in the pre-test, showing that gamification effectively boosts listening comprehension. For reading skill, the Wordwall app led to an average post-test score of 85.8, up from 61.1, demonstrating gamification’s role in increasing student motivation and reading comprehension. Similarly, in writing skill, students showed an average post-test score of 86.4, a substantial rise from 60.3 in the pre-test, highlighting the positive impact of interactive writing tasks. The findings support the research of Cheng et al. (2025), Rodríguez et al. (2023), Matyakhan et al. (2024), and Ibrahim et al. (2024), confirming that gamification enhances student engagement, motivation, and academic performance. This study provides strong evidence that gamification-based learning is highly effective in improving English language skills at the vocational level, suggesting that its implementation in higher education can significantly support students' language development and prepare them for professional careers.
