Abstract

Utilitarianism, introduced by Jeremy Bentham in the 18th century, proposes that the moral correctness of actions is judged on the basis of consequences that result in maximum happiness or well-being for the individuals involved, known as "the greatest happiness principle". However, the main criticism of this approach highlights the disregard for individual rights and the potential to justify unethical actions on the grounds of producing greater happiness overall. Criticism of Bentham's utilitarianism suggests that a focus on external consequences often overrides the internal moral values of an action, such as justice or moral obligation. The implication of this critique on modern understandings of justice, human rights, and moral values is the importance of considering deeper and broader moral aspects in ethical decision-making. In the face of the complexities of human life, not only the expected end result must be considered, but also fundamental moral principles such as individual human rights and just justice. A holistic ethical approach that integrates a variety of theories, including utilitarianism, deontology, and values approaches, is needed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the moral challenges faced by modern society. Thus, Bentham's critique of utilitarianism provides the basis for deeper reflection on the application of ethical principles in a broader and inclusive context..

Abstract

This study examines the integration of Sundanese culture and hadith teachings in the Wawacan Panganten Tujuh manuscript, an Islamic heritage of the archipelago with historical and spiritual significance. The research addresses the lack of academic studies exploring the cultural and religious dimensions of this manuscript. It aims to uncover the Islamic values within Wawacan Panganten Tujuh, particularly those referencing hadith, and to analyze the harmonization between local traditions and Islamic teachings. This study employed a qualitative approach, utilizing content analysis techniques and intertextuality theory, supported by philology, hadith takhrij, and Stuart Hall's theory of acceptance. The findings reveal that Wawacan Panganten Tujuh reflects the acculturation process between Sundanese culture and Islamic teachings through narrative elements, cultural symbolism, and marriage rituals such as huap lingkung and walimatul ursy, which align with the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH). These elements are adapted in a local context to reinforce the moral and spiritual message of marriage. In conclusion, this manuscript serves not only as a medium for preserving traditions but also as a relevant da'wah tool to address the challenges of modernization. With its profound Islamic values and contextual relevance, Wawacan Panganten Tujuh underscores the importance of maintaining harmony between local culture and Islamic sharia in building a unique Islamic identity in the archipelago.

Abstract

Education in Indonesia continues to face challenges, particularly the mismatch between graduates’ skills and labor market demands, alongside increasing social and moral issues. This study seeks to integrate Paulo Freire’s principles of conscientization, humanization, and dialogue with Islamic values of social justice, drawing on the hadith concerning the liberation of Badr War prisoners as a conceptual basis. Using a qualitative approach, the research applies content analysis of Freire’s works and classical hadith sources, supported by field studies at SMK Syahida Tasikmalaya. Findings show that the application of this transformative model in vocational schools encourages active student participation through critical discussions, social reflection, and contextual learning relevant to daily realities, including skills that strengthen family economies. Teachers report that the model assists in adapting lessons to students’ needs, particularly for those who lag behind, though challenges remain in administrative burdens and structural limitations. Students generally respond positively, describing the approach as more interactive, engaging, and socially relevant. This study concludes that integrating Islamic values with Freire’s critical pedagogy provides a strong foundation for vocational education grounded in social justice. Policy implications include strengthening teacher training, making curricula more flexible, and adopting evaluation methods that emphasize social contribution.
