Abstract

This study analyses the research dynamics on river water pollution over the last decade (2014-2024) using bibliometric analysis. Data were collected using Publish or Perish software with Google Scholar as the main source, using keywords such as 'river pollution', 'river water quality', 'river contamination' and 'river water pollution'. Articles published between 2014 and 2024 were selected, resulting in a total of 1,000 relevant publications. The bibliometric analysis was conducted using VOSviewer version 1.6.20, which allowed mapping of research trends and visualisation of key themes through network, overlay and density visualisation. The results identified five major clusters in river pollution research, with three dominant themes: "water quality index", "metal pollution" and "microplastics". The overlay visualisation showed an increasing focus on emerging themes such as urbanisation and climate change since 2017, and microplastics as a major concern since 2019. This bibliometric analysis provides valuable insights to guide future research by identifying trends and gaps in river pollution studies. It also supports the development of evidence-based environmental policies and highlights the need for interdisciplinary collaboration to effectively address pressing water pollution challenges.

Abstract

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are the primary driver of climate change and have become a significant concern in recent decades due to their increasing atmospheric concentration. This study aims to systematically review research trends on GHG emissions over the past 20 years using bibliometric analysis. A total of 1,035 articles were analyzed through VOSviewer to map knowledge structure, research dynamics, and emerging topics. The results show that GHG emission research is divided into six main clusters: (1) gas emissions, (2) industrial and waste management, (3) air quality and human health, (4) bioenergy and energy systems, (5) food production, and (6) global climate change mitigation. Research trends indicate a shift from sectoral studies, particularly agriculture and livestock production (2005–2016), to a more integrated and systemic approach involving energy systems, air quality, and human health (2020–2024). The density visualization highlights “gas emission” as the most frequent and central keyword. Moreover, keywords such as "Municipal Solid Waste Treatment," "Energy Production," and "Domestic GHG Mitigation" have emerged as future research hotspots. This study provides a comprehensive overview of GHG emission research developments and offers valuable insights for identifying future research directions and supporting GHG mitigation strategies.

Abstract

It is projected that global waste production will reach 3.4 billion tons by the year 2050, with 33% of this waste not managed in an environmentally sustainable manner. Since the beginning of the 21st century, there has been a significant increase in household and industrial waste, which poses major environmental, public health, and policy challenges. This study employed a systematic literature review (SLR) approach and bibliometric analysis to map global solid waste research trends. The data were collected in three stages: article identification, eligibility screening, and metadata extraction. These data were then analyzed using VOSviewer 1.6.20. A comparative analysis revealed a paradigm shift from a linear approach towards a circular economy model between 2004 and 2024. The period 2014-2024 signifies the consolidation of the concept of sustainability, marked by a 72% increase in network complexity. The research focus underwent a shift from municipal solid waste management to circular economy systems, which are now linked to 38% more derived concepts. New subjects, such as plastic pollution and post-consumption plastic waste, have emerged as predominant themes in 28% of recent publications. The density visualization demonstrates the most significant concentrations in the domains of circular economy and municipal waste management. There has been a marked increase in research activity in recent years, particularly with respect to plastic pollution and waste valorization.

Abstract

Final Disposal Sites (landfills) serve as the endpoint in the municipal solid waste management system, functioning as the final destination for our daily waste. Currently, Indonesia is experiencing a waste crisis due to the continuously increasing volume of waste generation, which leads to the rapid overfilling of landfill sites. One of the potential solutions for utilizing landfill waste is the production of Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF), an alternative fuel derived from solid waste. However, waste that has been buried in landfills generally contains high moisture content, rendering it unsuitable for immediate RDF application. The calorific value of RDF depends greatly on its moisture content, with higher moisture levels resulting in lower energy output. Therefore, a pre-treatment process in the form of drying is necessary to reduce moisture content and optimize the fuel quality of RDF. This study applies the Solar Greenhouse Biodrying (SGB) method as a waste drying technology that combines heat from solar radiation with biological heat generated during aerobic degradation. This method was selected due to its suitability to Indonesia’s tropical climate and its potential for large-scale application without requiring high external energy input. The waste material used in this study was obtained from landfill waste excavated at a depth of 3 meters, with an estimated age of approximately 9 years. In this study, a mixture of fresh waste and excavated landfill waste was dried using various composition ratios: 1:0 (control), 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, and 1:4. The results show that the SGB method effectively reduced moisture content by 27–62.2% and increased the calorific value to a range of 7.5–14 MJ/kg. The waste composition ratio significantly influenced moisture reduction, with the most optimal result found at a 1:2 ratio, which provided the best balance between drying efficiency and energy enhancement. These findings indicate that the SGB method is an effective alternative for waste drying prior to further utilization as RDF. Keyword: landfill mining, solar greenhouse biodrying, refuse-derived fuel, municipal solid waste, moisture content

Abstract

Sungai Langka Village has a communal Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) building, but the treated effluent still does not accordance the quality standards set by the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry Number 68 of 2016 concerning Domestic Wastewater Quality Standards. Phytoremediation was chosen as an environmentally friendly and easily applicable method. The selection of Myriophyllum aquaticum was due to its phytodegradation ability in breaking down organic and inorganic substances, as well as its abundance of bacteria that can absorb nutrients in the wastewater. This study used four reactors: Reactor A1 (control), Reactor A2 (phytoremediation), Reactor A3 (aeration), and Reactor A4 (phytoremediation and aeration). The results of this study showed that over time, the efficiency in reducing the ammonia parameter increased, with the following efficiencies recorded on day 15: Reactor A1 at 98.95%, Reactor A2 at 98.59%, Reactor A3 at 98.90%, and Reactor A4 at 98.15%. The results of statistical testing using multiple linear regression showed that the efficiency of ammonia parameter reduction was significantly affected by time variation, whereas the addition of aeration did not have a significant effect.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The Natar market is experiencing an increase in solid waste generation that has not been resolved optimally due to inadequate Temporary Waste Storage Site facilities and a lack of awareness, causing waste accumulation and the transfer of problems to the landfill. This study aimed to analyze solid waste generation and composition based on SNI 19-3964-1994 and to assess the economic potential of recycled waste and the cost-benefit analysis for organic waste processing. The amount of waste produced at the Natar Market was 884.45 kg per day and 7,902.33 liters per day. The composition of solid waste is dominated by organic waste (87.34 %), Low-Density Polyethylene plastic (8.70 %), paper/cardboard (2.14 %), Polyethylene Terephthalate plastic (1.27 %), and other types of waste less than 1%. The selected waste processing alternative was the Black Soldier Fly technology, with a scoring and weighting result of 418 points. Recycled waste has the potential to generate an economic value of IDR 2,151,796.50. The cost-benefit analysis shows that Black Soldier technology is feasible to implement with a Net Present Value of IDR 497,543,239.61, an Internal Rate of Return of 12%, and a Benefit Cost Ratio of 1.017.
