Abstract

Tarsier (Tarsius fuscus Fischer 1804) is one of endemic primates of South Sulawesi.  This species has been categorized as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. This This study was conducted in Resort Balocci, Bantimurung Bulusaraung National Park from May to July 2011. The data collected were composition and structure of vegetations, number and diversity of insects, distribution and population size of tarsier. This study revealed that tarsier inhabited secondary forest, plantations and vegetation near settlement (yard). Nesting trees of tarsier could be observed in the crevices of the rocks, in the cracks of ficus trees (Ficus spp.), sugar palm tree (Arenga pinnata) and bamboos (Bambusa spp.). A total of 112, 89 and 80 individuals of insects recorded in the secondary forest, vegetation near the settlement and plantation respectively. A total of 13 groups consisting of 44 individuals of tarsiers recorded in the study area.  Of the 44 indvividuals encountered, 31 individuals, 9 individuals, and 4 individuals recoreded  in secondary forest, plantation, and vegetation near settlement respectively. Population densities of tarsier were 151 individuals/km2 in the secondary forest, 36 individuals/km2 in the plantation and 23 individuals/km2  in the vegetation near the settlement. Keywords : Tarsius fuscus, habitat, population, Bantimurung Bulusaraung National Park

Abstract

Bantimurung-Bulusaraung National Park is the largest karst-ecosystem in Indonesia. Situated in the centre of Wallacea-Bioregion, the national parkhas significance role as stonghold of many species taht are endemic to this biodiversity’s hot spot.  This study aims to reveal mammals’diversity in the national park.  The study was conducted from February to March 2011. At leat  12 species consisting of 9 family of mammals recorded in the national park including the endemic and rare species such as Sulawesis’s Moore Macaque Macaca maura, Sulawesi’s Bear Cuscus Ailurops ursinus, Sulawesis’s Dwarf Cuscus Strigocuscus celebensis, and Tarsier  Tarsius fuscus. Keywords: Mammals, diversity, conservation, national park.

Abstract

Tarsier is a nocturnal insectivore primates endemic to Sulawesi including Buton Island. Buton tarsier is only occurrence on the island and its likely status as a distinct species make it more threatened than the other species on the mainland. Moreover, the habitat of this species has been suffering from forest clearance through illegal logging and mining. The aims of this study are to identify the sleeping site of the tarsier and the habitat characteristics surround its sleeping sites. The research were carried out from June to August 2014 at Lambsango Forest, Buton Island, Southeast Sulawesi. The data collected consisting locations and types of sleeping sites, habitat component including abiotic and biotic in each site where the tarsier sleeping site found. The study showed that mostly tarsier lived in the in strangler fig trees (Ficus sp.), rock crevices and sometimes in trees with hollow crevices or trees with vine tangles. Moreover, the study also showed that the sleeping sites mostly found near to the street, seetlement, and forest edge. Vegetation composition and insect’s abundance also influenced the existence of the sleeping location.  Keywords: Buton Island, habitat, Lambusango Forest, nest, tarsier
