Abstract

One of the most common complications associated with pregnancy is anemia. Severe anemia that occurs during pregnancy has adverse effects on both the mother and the fetus. This literature review aims to provide related information related to how anemia can occur in pregnancy, what are the risk factors and causes of anemia in pregnancy, and the impact of anemia on pregnant women and their fetuses. We searched from online databases and used review articles, research, guidelines from professional organizations, such as World Health Organization and Ministry of Health Republic of Indonesia. Result: In general, pregnant women will experience a decrease in hemoglobin concentration due to the physiological role of hemodelution during pregnancy. However, this condition will be worsened and make pregnant women fall into anemia when accompanied by other factors such as iron deficiency, folic acid deficiency, infection, non ideal BMI (Body Mass Index), and congenital blood diseases. As a result, severe anemia that occurs during pregnancy has adverse effects on both the mother and the fetus. Conclusion: It is important to understand the factors that cause anemia in pregnancy to avoid adverse effects on pregnant women and their fetuses or children.

Abstract

Talasemia merupakan penyakit herediter akibat gangguan produksi hemoglobin (Hb)  yang diwariskan secara autosomal resesif. Kondisi ini masih menjadi isu kesehatan di Indonesia. Pada kehamilan, Talasemia dapat meningkatkan risiko komplikasi maternal maupun janin, sehingga skrining memiliki peran krusial. Seorang perempuan berusia 26 tahun dengan riwayat transfusi darah berulang baru terdiagnosis Talasemia Beta Mayor setelah hamil. Selama hamil, pasien menjalani transfusi darah rutin setiap dua minggu dan pemeriksaan kehamilan rutin. Persalinan secara pervaginam pada usia kehamilan 39 minggu. Bayi memerlukan perawatan intensif akibat distress napas dan ikterus neonatorum. Kasus ini menyoroti lemahnya deteksi dini melalui skrining pra-nikah yang seharusnya mampu mencegah kehamilan berisiko tinggi. Kehamilan dengan Talasemia Beta Mayor tergolong risiko tinggi akibat anemia berat pada ibu. Skrining Talasemia pra-nikah perlu dilaksanakan secara menyeluruh untuk menekan komplikasi maternal dan neonatal.

Abstract

naemia is a global burden disease that mostly occurs in the reproductive age. About 31.2% of women of reproductive age (15-49 years) have anaemia. This condition may affect oxygen transport in the body and interfere with some bodily functions. Several factors may induce anaemia; iron deficiency is one of them. An amount of iron and protein intake may contribute to haemoglobin levels. This study aims to determine the correlation between iron and protein intake and haemoglobin levels among students in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Mataram. This is an observational analytic study using cross-sectional methods that includes students aged 17-20 years old. Data is taken in May–June 2024 using a spectrophotometer for checking haemoglobin levels. Iron and protein intake were traced by a 24-hour food records questionnaire over 2 days. Results: There are 118 samples with 25.42% male and 74.58% female. Normal mean haemoglobin levels were detected in this study (12.59±0.82). The correlation tests, with the t-test for iron and protein intake, are not significant, with p-values of 0.246 and 0.254, respectively. Also, total protein and iron intake from this study, with an Anova F-test, is not significant, with a p-value of 0.408. The amount of consumption of iron and protein intake is not significant in the hemoglobin levels of Faculty of Medicine Students of the University.
