Abstract

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Malocclusion is a common oral disorder that strongly correlates with orthodontic treatment needs (OTN), however the complete picture of OTN remains unclear. This bibliometric study was conducted to develop a complete picture of the OTN from 1974-2022. The purpose of this study was to conduct a bibliometric analysis of scientific research pertaining to orthodontic treatment needs Methods: Type of study was bibliometric analysis. The term "orthodontic treatment need" was used to search for relevant articles in the Scopus database. VOSviewer, OpenRefine, and Tableau Public were used to illustrate the contributions of authors, journals, institutions, countries and the co-occurrence analysis and references analysis of the keywords. Result: There were 890 publications produced as a result of this study. Richmond emerged as the author with the most extensive publication record, having authored a remarkable 21 pieces that garnered a cumulative total of 524 citations.  The analysis reveals that the United Kingdom, Brazil, and the United States emerged as the primary contributors to literature pertaining to the assessment of orthodontic treatment necessity. The analysis of keywords revealed the occurrence of seven distinct clusters, which are: Index of Orthodontic Treatment (IOTN), orthodontic treatment, quality of life, orthodontic, malocclusion, and oral health-related quality of life. The largest cluster identified in the study was "malocclusion," encompassing factors such as prevalence, the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI), treatment necessity, and the need for orthodontic intervention. Conclusion: In general, the number of articles addressing the need for orthodontic treatment has increased, particularly in the third and fourth decades. In the fourth decade, there were more articles about the IOTN that contained keywords directly related to the index, as well as self-esteem, quality of life, and its socio-demographic and socio-economic status correlation. KEYWORDSorthodontic treatment need; malocclusion; bibliometric; quality of life.

Abstract

Malocclusion’s negative impact is not only limited to dentofacial appearance but also related to quality of life. Nowadays, orthodontic treatment can be done using conventional fixed appliances, or removable appliances called clear aligners. The preference for orthodontic appliances can be affected by several factors, including patient characteristics, self-perception, psychosocial, and oral-disorder factors. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the factors affecting the preference for orthodontic appliances among undergraduate students in West Jakarta. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 244 undergraduate students were retrieved by purposive sampling from 7 universities located in West Jakarta. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data, and logistic regression analysis was carried out. Results: Fixed orthodontic appliances were commonly used (79.5%), and the majority of treatment providers were orthodontists (64.8%). Students’ belief that poor dental alignment is related to decreased social attractiveness was significantly associated with the preference for orthodontic appliances (p = 0.026; 95% CI = 1.170-11.317). Orthodontic treatment provider was significantly associated with a preference for orthodontic appliances (p = 0.000; 95% CI = 0.678-3.156). Conclusion: Fixed orthodontic appliances still become the main preference for malocclusion treatment among undergraduate students in West Jakarta. Besides that, the qualification of orthodontic treatment providers affects the preference for orthodontic appliances among undergraduate students in West Jakarta.

Abstract

Objectives: The misalignment of teeth and/or jaws caused by abnormalities in the dynamic process of craniofacial growth and development is known as malocclusion. Over half of children and adolescents worldwide experience some form of malocclusion. Orthodontic treatment is the process of adjusting the position of teeth and jaws to achieve optimal occlusion. In recent decades, there has been a global surge in the need for orthodontic treatment among adults. This study aims to evaluate the factors affecting interest in orthodontic treatment among adults in Jakarta. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from October to December 2023. A total of 196 adults were retrieved by purposive sampling from public places located in Jakarta. Self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data on demographic characteristics, knowledge regarding orthodontic treatment, self-perception, psychosocial, and oral disorder factors. Logistic regression analysis was carried out with a level of significance less than 0.05. Results: Majority of respondents had a good level of knowledge regarding orthodontic treatment (63.3%) and were interested in undergoing orthodontic treatment (85.7%). There was a significant association between other opinions about respondents’ dental arrangement and interest in orthodontic treatment (p = 0.018; 95% CI = 0.135 – 0.826). Self-perception factors, oral disorder factors, and demographic characteristics were not significant in predicting interest in orthodontic treatment. Conclusion: For adults in Jakarta, other people's opinion about respondents’ dental arrangements is the only psychosocial factor correlated with interest in orthodontic treatment. The importance of orthodontic care still needs to be improved for adults in Jakarta.
