Abstract

Hypertension is a major health issue among the elderly as it increases the risk of complications such as stroke and heart disease. Non-pharmacological efforts, such as vegetable juice consumption, are considered an easy and inexpensive alternative, including cucumber and carrot juice, which are rich in nutrients and have the potential to lower blood pressure. This study uses a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest approach involving two groups, consisting of 38 elderly respondents aged 60–70 years in Pematang Lalang Village, divided into cucumber juice and carrot juice group. The results show that cucumber juice reduces systolic blood pressure by an average of 36.06 mmHg and diastolic by 16.84 mmHg, while carrot juice lowers systolic by 30.78 mmHg and diastolic by 6.79 mmHg. Statistical analysis demonstrates a significant difference, where cucumber juice is more effective than carrot juice in lowering blood pressure among hypertensive elderly individuals. Therefore, cucumber juice can be recommended as a more optimal non-pharmacological alternative to help control blood pressure in the elderly.

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the main health problems in the elderly because it increases the risk of complications such as stroke and heart disease. Non-pharmacological efforts such as consuming herbal ingredients are considered an effective, affordable, and easy alternative to help reduce blood pressure. One of the herbal plants that has potential is garlic (Allium sativum L.), which contains allicin compounds with natural vasodilator effects that can help lower blood pressure. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a one group pretest-posttest approach, involving 15 respondents with hypertension in Jumantuang Village. Respondents were given boiled garlic water for seven days. Blood pressure was measured before and after the intervention using a digital sphygmomanometer. The results showed that the average systolic blood pressure before the administration of boiled garlic water was 165.2 mmHg and decreased to 151.0 mmHg after the intervention, with a decrease of 14.2 mmHg. Meanwhile, diastolic blood pressure decreased from 93.4 mmHg to 87.2 mmHg with a decrease of 6.2 mmHg. The Paired Sample T-Test showed a p-value of 0.000 (<0.05), indicating a significant effect between before and after the administration of boiled garlic water on reducing blood pressure. Boiled garlic water is effective in reducing blood pressure in hypertensive patients and can be used as a non-pharmacological therapy.

Abstract

Gout is a degenerative disease commonly experienced by the elderly as a result of purine metabolism disorders. It is characterized by elevated uric acid levels in the blood, causing joint pain and a decline in quality of life due to limitations in daily activities. The management of gout can be conducted not only through pharmacological therapy but also through non-pharmacological approaches, one of which is the use of herbal plants such as soursop leaves (Annona Muricata Linn), which are known to contain flavonoids and antioxidants that can inhibit uric acid formation. This study aimed to determine the effect of soursop leaf tea infusion on reducing uric acid levels among the elderly at Posyandu Kenangan Baru, Percut Sei Tuan District, Deli Serdang Regency. This study employed a quantitative pre-experimental design using a one group pretest–posttest design. A single intervention group was used in this study. A total of 25 respondents were selected using purposive sampling techniques. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The results of the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test showed a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference in uric acid levels before and after the intervention. These findings demonstrate that the administration of soursop leaf tea infusion had a significant effect on reducing uric acid levels among the elderly. The administration of soursop leaf tea infusion is effective in reducing uric acid levels in elderly patients with gout and can be applied as an alternative non pharmacological therapy in the management of gout in healthcare facilities.
