Abstract

This study aims to examine the violations of politeness principles in recommending speech acts that occur in the reality show "Terrace House: Opening New Doors". Based on politeness theory proposed by Leech and the politeness strategies from Brown and Levinson, the researcher analyzes data from dialogues containing recommending speech acts delivered by participants in the reality show "Terrace House: Opening New Doors". The research method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques through observation and recording of dialogues containing recommending speech acts. The analysis method used is the referential matching method with recommending speech acts as the determining reference. The results of the study show that there are 48 violations of politeness principles in recommending speech acts. The most frequent violations occur in agreement maxim with 30 instances (63%), followed by violations of appreciation maxim with 11 instances (22%), and violations sympathy maxim with 7 instances (15%). The most frequently used politeness strategy is negative politeness strategy with 17 instances (35%), followed by bald on-record strategy with 14 instances (29%), positive politeness strategy with 10 instances (21%), and off-record strategy with 7 instances (15%). In conclusion, violations of politeness principles often occur in the delivery of recommendations, especially violations of agreement maxim. These violations caused by a lack of understanding of the interlocutor's situation and prioritizing effectiveness over politeness. The negative politeness strategy is the most used strategy to address violations of the agreement maxim, as it helps reduce discomfort and minimizes threats to negative face of the interlocutor.

Abstract

Kampung Budaya Petukangan is a tourism village in Jakarta. Unfortunately, the existence of this place is not well known by the public yet. Using the force of social media to make more people notice of this cultural place is considered the best low-cost activity. Nonetheless, the practitioners of Kampung Budaya Petukangan who are youth, considered relatively unskillful in writing articles, particularly about cultural news. Aware of this problem, we come into solution by organizing a training for practitioners to enhance their skills on how to write cultural news in three stages: pre-training (observation and training preparation), training (theory and practice of writing cultural news), and post-training (evaluation). As the outcome of this training, 20 cultural news articles were written by the practitioners where the writing process was assisted by academics and journalistic practitioners. The final product of the training is a collection of cultural articles that can be disseminated in various mass media. Journalism training is an effective strategy to increase the writing skills of the community of cultural practitioners in Petukangan so that in the near future, Kampung Budaya Petukangan can be more popular and publicly well known.   Abstrak  Kampung Budaya Petukangan adalah sebuah destinasi desa wisata di Jakarta. Sayangnya keberadaan tempat ini kurang dikenal oleh masyarakat. Menggunakan kekuatan media sosial untuk membuat orang lebih menyadari keberadaan tempat budaya ini merupakan aktivitas terbaik yang berbiaya rendah. Namun demikian, praktisi Kampung Budaya Petukangan yang masih remaja belum memiliki kemampuan yang memadai untuk menulis artikel, khususnya artikel mengenai berita kebudayaan. Memahami permasalahan ini, kami memberikan solusi dengan mengadakan pelatihan untuk para praktisi untuk meningkatkan kemampuan mereka dalam menulis berita kebudayaan. Pelatihan yang diselenggarakan terbagi menjadi tiga tahapan yaitu tahap prapelatihan (observasi dan persiapan pelatihan), tahap pelatihan (teori dan praktek menulis berita kebudayaan), tahap pascapelatihan (evaluasi). Luaran dari kegiatan pelatihan ini berupa 20 artikel berita budaya yang ditulis oleh praktisi dimana dalam proses penulisannya dilakukan secara terbimbing oleh praktisi akademisi dan jurnalis. Produk akhir kegiatan ini berupa kumpulan berita budaya yang bisa didiseminasikan di berbagai media massa. Pelatihan jurnalistik merupakan cara yang efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis komunitas praktisi Kampung Budaya Petukangan. Dengan diadakannya kegiatan ini, Kampung Budaya Petukangan diharapkan bisa menjadi lebih populer dan dikenal luas dalam waktu dekat.

Abstract

This study aims to compare the educational ideologies of two figures: Yoshida Shouin, a historical figure from Japan’s Edo period, and Yoshida Shouyou, a fictional character from the anime Gintama. The research focuses on the ideologies and actions of both Yoshida Shouin and Yoshida Shouyou. The data are presented descriptively based on Sugiyono’s theoretical framework (2019) and further analyzed through the comparative lens of Winarno’s theory (as cited in Hasbi, 2013:6). The study concentrates on the field of education, as both Yoshida Shouin in historical context and Yoshida Shouyou in literary representation are depicted as influential educators to their students at Shouka Sonjuku. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, analyzing a total of 10 data points. The findings on Yoshida Shouin’s educational ideology reveal the following: essentialism (3 occurrences), conservatism (2), progressivism (3), and liberalism (2). Meanwhile, Yoshida Shouyou is characterized by the following ideological tendencies: essentialism (4 occurrences), conservatism (2), progressivism (2), and liberalism (2). Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that the two figures differ in terms of their foundational educational ideologies. Yoshida Shouin tends to align with essentialist and progressivist ideologies, whereas Yoshida Shouyou demonstrates a stronger inclination toward essentialist principles.

Abstract

In Japanese not all words can be translated into Indonesian, especially a cultural word. Therefore, a translation strategy is needed to find a cultural equivalents. The purpose of this reserch is to know the social cultural and social organization and the translating strategies used in Natsume’s Bocchan novel. This is the descriptive qualitative reserch about content analysis. Based on the analysis of data, it is found seventy two cultural word that is (1) social culture is 25 data; and (2) organization cultural is 52 data. There are seven strategies used by translator, namely (1) twenty two words which translated using a loan word or loan word plus explanation; (2) twenty one words which translated paraphrase using a related word; (3) sixteen words which translated using cultural substitution; (4) ten words which translated using paraphrase using unrelated words; (5) four words which translated using a more general word; and (6) three words which translated using omission.

Abstract

Japanese learners are required to have multiple intelligences in order to master kanjiparticularly Rikusho. Conducted in Japanese Department of Language and Art Faculty ofState University of Jakarta (UNJ) in 2015 with 43 respondents, the aims of this research isto know students’ level of competence in conjecturing kanji particularly in: 1) The use ofkai’i moji to represent countries, 2) The standardized form and the meaning of kanji basedon its origins and its’ classification based on rikusho. The results shows that therespondents’ level of competence is below average in conjecturing Kai’i Moji, mostly onaverage level in conjecturing standardized kanji with its meaning and in classifying kanjibased on types of rikusho.
