Abstract

This study aims to determine the level of student learning outcomes before and after the implementation of a collaborative strategy in dance classes at SMPN 1 Kunduran. To achieve optimal learning outcomes, appropriate teaching strategies are essential. At SMPN 1 Kunduran, the effectiveness of dance education has faced challenges, as reflected in the low student performance. This issue stems from a one-way teaching method that limits students' opportunities for exploration and focuses mainly on memorization and imitation of movements. The research was conducted using a quantitative approach, employing an experimental method to evaluate the impact of collaborative strategies on student learning outcomes. The findings indicate that the implementation of collaborative strategies in dance education at SMPN 1 Kunduran has proven effective. There was a significant improvement in students' learning outcomes, covering cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects. These results highlight the importance of adopting more interactive and collaborative teaching methods. Based on these findings, collaborative strategies are worth considering as an effective approach to enhancing the quality of education, particularly in art subjects such as dance. In dance education, student interaction and active participation are crucial to achieving optimal learning outcomes.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the symbolic meanings embedded in the Raspati Dance performed at Sanggar Galura Kencana, Garut Regency, using the semiotic perspective of Charles Sanders Peirce. It aims to identify and interpret the system of signs found in the choreographic structure, movement vocabulary, makeup, and costume as representations of Sundanese women’s leadership values in education. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and literature review, and triangulation was applied to ensure validity. The analysis is based on Peirce’s triadic model, which consists of the sign, object, and interpretant, to understand how visual and kinetic elements function as cultural signs within the performance. The findings show that the movement sequences of the Raspati Dance do not merely serve aesthetic purposes, but also represent values such as perseverance, intelligence, solidarity, and leadership vision among women. The makeup and costume further reinforce the visual dimension, highlighting the image of Sundanese women as graceful, firm, and dignified. All the interconnected elements of the dance create a symbolic narrative that reflects women's struggle to gain knowledge and contribute to societal development. In this sense, the Raspati Dance can be understood as a form of cultural expression that combines artistic creativity with symbolic meanings rooted in the social and cultural values of Sundanese society.

Abstract

This study is driven by the need for innovation in dance education at Sekolah Indonesia Luar Negeri (Indonesian Schools Abroad), where limited access to expert instructors remains a challenge, alongside the growing importance of technology in supporting skill-based learning. The study aims to describe the implementation of a blended learning model supported by audio-visual media in dance instruction at Sekolah Indonesia Johor Bahru (SIJB) and to examine the resulting learning outcomes. The study adopts a descriptive qualitative approach involving teachers, students, and expert instructors as participants. Data were collected through two days of direct observation, follow-up interviews conducted online via WhatsApp, questionnaires, and documentation. The analysis followed stages of data reduction, data display, and verification using triangulation techniques. The findings show that the learning process unfolds through interconnected stages, including video-based material distribution, independent learning, face-to-face practice, expert evaluation, and continued practice leading to performance. Audio-visual media serves as an initial learning resource that helps students build foundational understanding, while face-to-face practice with teacher guidance strengthens technical mastery of movements. Students’ responses reflect a generally positive trend, particularly in relation to interaction and direct learning, although variations in ability emerge due to differences in prior learning experience. Learning outcomes appear across cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains, all of which develop throughout the process. In conclusion, the findings indicate that integrating audio-visual media with face-to-face learning supports a structured and sustained dance learning process, particularly in contexts with limited resources.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the need to improve the movement quality of intermediate-level dancers. In practice, training tends to emphasize mastery of mechanical techniques and memorization of choreography, while body awareness and dancers’ sensory experiences have not been the primary focus. This condition indicates a gap between movement form mastery and conscious movement quality. Somatic practice, as a mind-body approach, offers an alternative training method that emphasizes movement learning through sensory awareness and internal body control. This study aims to analyze whether the implementation of somatic training can significantly improve the movement quality of intermediate-level dancers at Studio Purnamasari. This study employed a quantitative approach with a one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design. Six intermediate-level dancers participated in the study. Data were collected through movement quality assessments before (pretest) and after (posttest) the implementation of somatic training. The results showed an increase in the average score from 75.82 (pretest) to 87.64 (posttest), with a significant difference (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that somatic training effectively improves dancers’ movement quality through enhanced body awareness, movement coordination, and control of energy and breathing. This study contributes empirically to the development of body-awareness-based training methods in non-formal dance education.

Abstract

Studies of dance aesthetics in Indonesia have so far been more oriented towards the performative qualities of dancers, thus failing to comprehensively explain the mechanisms of aesthetic formation of dance works. This study aims to formulate the aesthetic construction of Sundanese Classical Dance through an analysis of the relationship between artistic structure and the Sundanese aristocratic cultural value system. This study uses a qualitative paradigm with an ethnochoreological approach. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, documentation studies, and literature studies of dance maestros, choreographers, academics, cultural figures, and practitioners of Sundanese Classical Dance in West Java. The analysis was carried out iteratively through the identification of artistic structures, identification of cultural values, relational analysis, and conceptual synthesis. The results of the study indicate that the aesthetics of Sundanese Classical Dance are not formed solely by the individual abilities of the dancers, but are the result of a construction born from the dynamic interaction between artistic structures including movement, music, makeup, costume, spatial patterns, and presentation with the Sundanese aristocratic cultural value system such as refinement, harmony, politeness, self-control, and honor. This study produces a Sundanese Classical Dance Aesthetic Construction Model that explains the process of transforming cultural values into artistic structures, thereby producing aesthetic experiences and shaping the aesthetic identity of dance works. These findings expand the study of dance aesthetics from a dancer-centered paradigm to one that positions dance works as artistic and cultural constructions and offers a conceptual framework that can be applied to research on various Indonesian dance traditions.
