Abstract

The vegetation profile is a vertical and horizontal description as well as the structure and species composition of a vegetation which includes the dominance of canopy cover, species diversity, species dominance, species frequency, species density and undergrowth. This research aims to obtain an overview of the composition, vertical and horizontal structure of vegetation so as to provide information about tree dynamics and ecological conditions as well as to view tree architectural models. The method for collecting community profile data is carried out in each sample plot measuring 20x20 m with data requirements such as: trunk diameter at DBH height, tree height, tree height, canopy limit, and tree canopy projection. Based on data on tree height and diameter, it was concluded that the trees in the research plot area were trees of the past because they had a total height of between 20-54 meters with a trunk diameter of ±1.63 meters. the results of drawing architectural profiles of tree canopy projections horizontally and vertically so that we can see models of canopy closure and competition for sunlight in homogeneous forest tree communities consisting of the Agathis loranthifolia species. The results of the horizontal and vertical projection of the architectural profile of the tree canopy can be seen so that the model of canopy closure and competition for sunlight in a homogeneous forest tree community consisting of the Agathis loranthifolia species can be seen. The ecological function of the Agathis loranthifolia type is very good in maintaining the environment, related to groundwater storage which can reduce the impact of soil erosion rates. Certain tree architectural models influence the transformation of rainwater into stem flow rate, water through the canopy, infiltration and surface flow rate in an area which is related to the role of vegetation as disaster mitigation.

Abstract

The diversity of vegetation can reflect the vegetation structure of an area against information on species composition, distribution patterns, density patterns, frequencies, and species dominance to determine the important value index of the forest community composition of a plant species. This study aims to analyze understory vegetation in the IPB Dramaga Campus Forest using two main methods, namely line intercept and point intercept. Both methods are applied to compare the effectiveness of measuring ecological parameters such as density, frequency, dominance, and understory diversity index. The results showed that there were 10 types of plants with the line intercept method including Digitaria fuscencens, Spilanthes paniculata, Cleome vicicosa, Clitorea Ternatea, Digitaria longifora, Britaria reptans, Ageraitum conzoides, Imperacta clindraca, Hevea braziliensis, Paku. Meanwhile, in the tangent point method, 5 species were found at the research method line points as follows: Digitaria fuscencens, Spilanthes paniculata, Clitorea Ternatea, Digitaria longifora, Altherenthera philoxeoriides. The analysis of the importance value index in the tangent line method showed that Spilanthes paniculata dominated the understory vegetation with an importance value index of 145.91%, followed by Digitaria fuscencens (48.39%) and Digitaria longifora (40.58%). Meanwhile, in the tangent point method, Digitaria fuscencens had the highest importance value index of 69.46%, followed by Spilanthes paniculata (69.20%) and Clitorea ternatea (40.65%), with the lowest importance value index of Digitaria longifora (16.52%) and Altherenthera philoxeoriides (7.17%). The tangent line method is more effective in describing the horizontal distribution of vegetation, while the tangent point method provides high precision in estimating relative cover. The understory vegetation in this area is dominated by certain species that have high adaptation to the IPB University campus forest environment.

Abstract

Gunung Walat Educational Forest is one of the ecosystems rich in biodiversity, including understory plants that play an important role in maintaining the ecological balance of the forest. This study aims to analyze understory vegetation in Gunung Walat Educational Forest using the line intercept method. This method was chosen because of its effectiveness in measuring the diversity, dominance, and distribution of understory plants in natural habitats. Data were collected by recording the types of plants that crossed the transect line, supplemented by measurements of density, frequency, and relative cover. The results showed that 16 types of understory plants were found in homogeneous and heterogeneous forest ecosystems including: Aghatis damara, Arenga undulatifora, Cinnanonum cintoc, Homalonema sp, Hornstedtia pinanga, Leea aquata indica, Melastoma malabathricum linn, Palmae, Pandanus furactum, Pinanna curunarri, Piper nigrum, Selaginella doederlinni, Shorea sp, Strubilentes crispus, Tetrastigma lanceolarium, and Zingiber zerumbe. The results showed that the number of understory plant species found in heterogeneous forests was higher than in homogeneous forests, with 17 and 15 species respectively. In homogeneous forests, the Selaginella doederleinii species dominates quantitatively with the highest relative density (46.26%), the highest relative frequency (39.70%), and the highest dominance (42.76%). This causes Selaginella doederleinii to have the highest important value index (INP) of 128.74%, followed by Tetrastigma lanceolarium (68.62%) and Homalonema sp (17.92%). The biodiversity of homogeneous forests in GWUF shows a high species diversity index (H’), which is an average of 4.27 with a species evenness of 1.45.
