Abstract

Introduction: In pluralistic societies like Indonesia, religious moderation is a critical public health and social cohesion imperative. Mosques and their imams serve as pivotal institutions and leaders in shaping community attitudes. This study explores how mosque imams in the Muslim-minority regions of Dairy and West Pakpak, North Sumatra, leverage local wisdom to foster religious moderation and social harmony. Objective: This research aims to analyze the practices and impact of mosque imams in promoting religious moderation by integrating Islamic teachings with indigenous local values, specifically the Sikata One (unity and solidarity) and Marga Silima (balance and harmony) principles of the Pakpak community. Methods: A qualitative study was conducted in Dairy and West Pakpak Regencies. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with mosque imams and administrators (n=40) and supplemented by content analysis of relevant documents, including local manuscripts and literature on religious moderation. A thematic analysis was employed to identify key patterns in the imams' strategies for integrating local wisdom with religious teachings. Results: The findings reveal a high prevalence of moderate attitudes among community members influenced by the imams. Key results include: 70% acceptance of friends from different religions; 75% rejection of coercing others to conform to one's religious will; and 90% comfort in sitting next to individuals of different faiths at events. Thematic analysis identified that imams actively incorporate the principles of Sikata One and Marga Silima into sermons and community guidance, framing religious coexistence as an extension of traditional cultural values. Conclusion: Mosque imams play an instrumental role as agents of religious moderation by effectively syncretizing Islamic doctrine with deeply held local wisdom. This culturally-grounded approach, championed by religious leaders, is a significant factor in the sustained interfaith harmony observed in these regions. The study underscores the importance of leveraging cultural assets and religious leadership in public health and policy initiatives aimed at building resilient, tolerant, and cohesive societies. Keywords: Religious Moderation, Mosque Imams, Local Wisdom, Social Cohesion.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the effectiveness of using technology-based Flipbook learning media in increasing students' learning motivation in Social Studies (IPS) subjects in grade XI at SMAS Dharma Utama Medan. The background of the research stems from the low motivation and participation of students in IPS learning, which is still dominated by conventional methods. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design to gain an in-depth understanding of students' learning experiences using Flipbooks. The research subjects consisted of IPS teachers and eighth grade XI students, while data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation during the period from July to September 2025. The research results indicate a substantial increase in students' motivation and engagement following the implementation of Flipbook media. Students became more active in discussions, were bolder in asking questions, and showed higher interest and learning independence. The use of a Flipbook with text, image, video, and interactive animation features created an engaging and enjoyable learning environment, thereby fostering students' intrinsic motivation to understand social studies material independently. Additionally, Flipbook-based learning also strengthened digital literacy and increased students' active participation in the learning process.

Abstract

This study investigates the evolving practice of the Mangalehen Tuor tradition in Mandailing wedding ceremonies, particularly in Damuli Pekan Village, and its potential as a source of contextual sociology learning. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis involving traditional leaders and indigenous Mandailing community members. Data were analyzed through reduction stages, presentation, verification, and conclusion. The findings reveal significant transformations in the tradition, particularly in the quantity and types of tuor offered, and in the dynamics of the negotiation process. Historically grounded in customary values and kinship relations, the Mangalehen Tuor tradition has shifted toward more pragmatic considerations influenced by economic factors and modern lifestyles. These shifts reflect broader processes of social change, modernization, and the influence of globalization on local cultural practices. This transformation offers valuable insights for sociological inquiry, particularly regarding adapting traditions in response to contemporary societal pressures. As such, the case of Mangalehen Tuor provides a relevant and culturally rich resource for sociology education, enabling students to examine the interplay between tradition and modernity critically. This case study contributes to a deeper understanding of socio-cultural transformation and its pedagogical implications for contextualizing sociology education. It also underscores the importance of preserving local wisdom amid global influences, offering a pathway for younger generations to engage with and learn from their cultural heritage.
