Abstract

White seabass (Lates calcarifer) is classified as a fishery commodity that has a high selling value with an easy cultivation method. However, water quality is an obstacle in the fish cultivation process. Therefore, it is necessary to implement an appropriate cultivation system, including a recirculation aquaculture system (RAS). RAS is reuse of water that has been used through a filter so that fish with high growth and survival are obtained. The aim of the research was to analyze the growth performance of white seabass cultivated with RAS. The research was conducted at the Mariculture Laboratory of the Aquaculture Technology Study Program, Tual State Polytechnic of Fisheries in June to August 2024. The research was used a descriptive type with initial length measurements (4 and 5 cm) and was repeated 3 times. A total of 10 fish were kept in a hapa in a rearing tank and equipped with RAS using sand and charcoal filters. Growth performance were measured included body length, body weight, growth rate, and survival rate. The research results show that the RAS system determines the growth performance of white seabass. This is evidenced by the increasing average increase in length and body weight. At an initial length of 4 cm, the average increase was 6.5 cm and 4.25 g, while at an initial length of 5 cm it was 8.3 cm and 6.5 g. The average survival rate was 75% at an initial fish size of 4 cm and 86% at an initial fish size of 5 cm. Thus, the RAS system can be applied in white seabass cultivation.

Abstract

Abstract

Lake Waren is an important lotic in Tual City, playing a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance, a habitat for flora-fauna aquatic, a hydrological cycle, and an area for fish spawning and growth. However, human activities (domestic wastel, tourism activities) increase nutrient levels (N and P) which triggers eutrophication and impacts water quality degradation, changes in phytoplankton composition, and disruption of food chain. Phytoplankton composition and abundance can describe the trophic status (oligotrophic, mesotrophic, eutrophic). Therefore, monitoring water through phytoplankton analysis and organic pollution levels is important to maintain ecosystem balance and ecological sustainability, especially for fisheries. Plankton sampling was conducted at five stations for three observations over two weeks. Plankton samples obtained from plankton net were given 2-3 drops of Lugol as preservation, then observed under a microscope using Sedwick-Rafter Counting Cell (SRC). The results of the plankton analysis explained that Lake Waren has a eutrophic status (IN = 7.7) and indicated organic matter contamination (IP = 15). The aquatic ecosystem is in a stable condition and has good resilience ability, with no dominance of certain plankton species described from medium diversity (phytoplankton 1.7096 - 2.3044; zooplankton 0.8587 - 1.6406), high uniformity (phytoplankton 0.9006 - 0.9610; zooplankton 0.7156 - 1.0194), and low dominance (phytoplankton 0.1070 - 0.2039; zooplankton 0.2093 - 0.4793). This condition is supported by water quality parameters according to quality standards for the life of freshwater biota, namely temperature (30 - 32oC), pH (8.2 - 8.6), DO (4 - 6.5 mg/L), and brightness (80 - 130 cm).

Abstract

Project-based learning model emphasizes practical experience and real projects. By implementing this learning model, skills that are much needed in society and the world of work today can be developed well in higher education. The Aquaculture Technology study program at the Politeknik Perikanan Negeri Tual must prepare graduates who are competent at work. The aquaculture course offers location planning concepts, culture methods, feeding management, water quality management, disease control, harvesting, packing and transportation of harvested produce. These concepts can be learned by applying a project-based learning model using the Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) for fish culture. Thus, this study was aimed to analyze the effectiveness of project-based learning model implementation to improve the student learning outcomes in aquaculture course. In this study, seven students of 4th semester from the Aquaculture Technology Study Program was selected. The learning outcomes assessed include the cognitive domain using pre-test and post-test questions, while affective and psychomotor assessment used the 21st century skills, literacy skills, life skills, reports and presentations. All data were analyzed descriptively. The results indicate that the project-based learning model is effectively applied in aquaculture course, as shown by the average initial test score of 55.29 and an increase in the final test score of 80.86; 21st century skills of 81.79; literacy skills of 74.95; life skills of 75.49; reports and presentations amounted to 74.14. In lecture activities, students are productive and creative in developing knowledge, attitudes, and skills in an integrated manner.
