Abstract

Abstract

ABSTRACT Introduction: Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. The prevalence of glaucoma is estimated at 111.8 million people will suffer from glaucoma in 2040, so that through good knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of health workers, it can support the control of the severity of glaucoma. Purpose: To assess awareness and knowledge about glaucoma, attitude and behavior to glaucoma screening in Health center, Makassar city, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Methods: Quantitative with cross sectional descriptive research design. Through filling iut questionnaires on 107 Health workers at Makkassar health city center on September 11 -12. In this research there are theree variables that are assessed, namely knowledge, attitude, and behavior. Result: Health workers As many as 52 respondents had a good level of knowledge, 55 respondents had a sufficient level of knowledge, and no respondents had a poor level of knowledge. Attitudes towards glaucoma were obtained 86 respondents (80.4%) conducted visual acuity tests on patients who complained of impaired vision, 76 respondents (71%) conducted visual field tests on patients suspected of glaucoma, 71 respondents (66.4%) conducted eyeball palpation examinations on patients suspected of glaucoma, and as many as 98 respondents (91.6%) behaved positively as indicated by referring patients with glaucoma to hospitals that have eye specialists. Conclusion: Awareness and level of knowledge about glaucoma among health workers in health centers are good. This condition can help in suppressing the occurrence of permanent blindness due to glaucoma. Efforts to prevent blindness due to glaucoma can be done by increasing the knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of health workers so that glaucoma can be detected early. Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between laptop use and the degree of Near Point Convergence (NPC) among employees at the Makassar Eye Hospital in 2024 using the Royal Air Force Rule (RAF Rule) tool. The research uses a descriptive method with a cross-sectional approach involving 36 participants selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate statistical tests. Results showed no significant relationship between NPC and age (p = 0.149) or gender (p = 0.480). However, a significant relationship was found between screen time and NPC (p = 0.035), suggesting that prolonged laptop use can negatively affect convergence ability. These findings underscore the need for awareness and preventive strategies among individuals with extended screen exposure to minimize risks of convergence insufficiency.

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) type II is a metabolic disorder caused by insulin resistance in muscle and liver cells, as well as pancreatic beta cell failure. Diabetic retinopathy is one of the diseases that is a microvascular complication of the retina due to chronic hyperglycemia in patients with Type II DM. Chronic hyperglycemia in patients with type 2 DM can change the physiology and biochemistry of cells, resulting in endothelial damage. In this condition, various biochemical pathways are activated, and this affects the occurrence of 4 pathophysiologies of diabetic retinopathy. Several risk factors suspected of triggering diabetic retinopathy are age, duration of disease, poor blood sugar control or hyperglycemia and blood pressure, dyslipidemia, hyperviscosity, kidney failure, anemia, and smoking. Blood sugar control is the most dominant risk factor for diabetic retinopathy among other factors in patients with type II DM. Based on the background, the author is interested in conducting research on risk factors that influence the incidence of diabetic retinopathy. The purpose of this study was to determine the risk factors that influence the incidence of diabetic retinopathy. The research conducted was a Literature Review with a Narrative Review design. Based on the search results, 7 relevant articles were obtained for use in this Narrative Review. The conclusion is that the risk factors suspected of causing diabetic retinopathy include the duration of diabetes mellitus, uncontrolled blood sugar levels, and Type II DM patients with hypertension or dyslipidemia.
