Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 Pandemic urges medical education to adjust the learning process, one of which is to become more efficient. Sharing resources is one of the adjustments that could be applied, and the elective posting based on Indonesia’s local wisdom could be one of the options. Therefore, we want to share the lesson learned from a collaborative elective posting between three faculty of medicine in Indonesia that can be a model for other medical institutions in sharing resources for learning.Aims: This case study aims to describe the implementation and lessons learned from an elective posting program.Case discussion: The collaborative elective posting is the elective posting module developed by three medical institutions from three different areas based on each of their local wisdom. Each institution recruits two pre-clinical students from another institution to join the module together with a group of students from the original institution. The module is four weeks long and worth three credits. Various learning methods, including lectures, small group discussions, and field studies, were used in each module. The goal of each module was assessed by portfolio, final report, and final writing test. At the end of the module, a self-administered questionnaire was used to assess student and team satisfaction. All students (100%) enjoyed the module and received excellent final grades ranging from A- to A; however, there were some difficulties in the module management, including scheduling and facilities. Conclusion: The collaborative elective posting is a learning innovation that can be utilized to improve medical education efficiency and efficacy.

Abstract

Abstract

Introduction: Higher education institutions are responsible for accommodating students to synthesise the knowledge and skills they obtained in the classroom or workplace through reflections. In the field of health professional education, the use of e-portfolio has provided an empirically validated conceptual model of integrated knowledge and learning. Therefore, it is essential to analyse the need to establish a new platform to engage stakeholders and thus ensure daily use of e-portfolio by students in undergraduate dentistry program in Indonesia. The present study was aimed to develop an e-portfolio platform based on a needs analysis and explore stakeholders’ perceptions following its implementation. Methods: The present study was a participatory action research study using a cross-sectional design with a qualitative approach that involved trainees and supervisors in an undergraduate clinical dentistry program. The study was divided into three stages: the exploration stage, the pilot study stage, and the evaluation stage of the e-portfolio platform. Data were collected using in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with stakeholders, which included faculty members and students. Data were analysed thematically. Results: The e-portfolio platform was developed according to the results of the needs analysis stage while considering stakeholders’ expectations and expected features. The results of the evaluation stage indicated a positive response from respondents. Respondents considered the e-portfolio to be very useful in students’ professional development, as it helped students to understand the content, assisted in learning, and improved their understanding of self-reflection. Conclusion: Performing a needs analysis prior to the development of an e-portfolio system provided information on technical issues regarding its development as well as the adequate supporting system required prior to its implementation. Although the implementation of the e-portfolio developed in this early stage was not conducted ideally, students reported a satisfactory impact on their learning.

Abstract

The prevalence of stress among medical students has been reported to be 31.7% across six universities in Sudan and 58% at Andalas University. Academic stress is known to affect students’ performance, including failure in the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). This study aimed to examine the relationship between examination-related stress levels and OSCE passing outcomes in the Basic Clinical Skills (KKD) module among students of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. This study employed an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The study participants were third- and fourth-year medical students, totaling 92. Examination stress levels were measured using the Westside Anxiety Test Scale, while OSCE passing status was obtained from secondary academic records. Bivariate analysis was conducted using the chi-square test. The most commonly reported level of examination stress was moderate (47.6%), followed by severe (37.0%) and mild (16.3%). The highest failure rate was observed in the BCS-OSCE 3 (23.9%), followed by BCS-OSCE 2 (10.9%) and BCS-OSCE 1 (7.6%). Bivariate analysis showed no significant association between examination stress levels and OSCE KKD passing status. Similarly, no significant relationship was found between daily study duration and OSCE passing outcomes.

Abstract

Introduction: Helicopter parenting has many negative impacts on higher education, including how it affects students’ college adjustment and academic achievement. Although a wide range of articles explore helicopter parenting and its influence on higher education, the research on medical education still scarce. Methods: The aims of this study provide a brief explanation of helicopter parenting and its impact on medical education. Articles were collected by assessing SpringerLink, ScienceDirect, Taylor & Francis, and Google Scholar databases. Result: Overcontrol and overprotective manners from helicopter parents may reduce children’s sense of autonomy and competence. Hence, it significantly reduces students’ self-efficacy, self-directed learning, and has low intrinsic motivation in learning. The children of helicopter parents are vulnerable to stress, anxiety, and depression, and tend to have difficulties adjusting to college life. Conclusion: Considering the negative impacts of helicopter parenting, faculty and medical teachers need to develop strategies to address the issue and prevent further impacts.
